Origin's new range of EVO15-S gaming notebooks pack power in a slimline form factor

Gaming-grade notebooks are known to be the least portable member of the ‘portable’ notebook fraternity, or sorority. Sure you can pick them up and take them with you, but they tend to be pretty thick, pretty broad and pretty heavy, and the battery life is rarely great. Origin PC is looking to fix at least some of that with its new EVO15-S notebook range, which offers powerful hardware in a surprisingly slim package.

Measuring just 0.78 inches deep at its thickest point and as little as 4.2 pounds, the new Origin system is still powerful, despite its diminutive size. Within its slimline exterior, Origin has packed a sixth-generation, Core i7-6700HQ CPU, as well as 16GB of DDR4 running at 2,133MHz, twin 128GB M.2 SSD in a RAID 0 configuration for maximum throughput, and a dedicated Nvidia GTX 970 gaming GPU with 6GB of dedicated GDDR5.

If all that wasn’t enough, there’s even a one-terabyte storage drive to keep everything that doesn’t need uber-fast SSD access, and the battery is said to last up to four hours.

It’s not all pre-packaged though, and there are some choices left to you when it comes to selecting an EVO15-S. For starters, there are two options for displays: 1080p, or 4K, both of which are 15 inches diagonally and we’re told can run at 60 frames per second without difficulty on the internal hardware.

While that will be dependent on the type of game being played, it’s good to know that Origin feels the system is capable of delivering the minimum standard for PC smooth play.

Other options include a choice of operating system, with Windows 7, through 8.1 and Windows 10 Home/Professional all possible. The case too can be tweaked to your preference, with options for various colors, custom paint jobs and etching.

Whichever one you pick though, the Origin EVO-S comes with an anti-ghosting backlit keyboard, support for Creative’s Sound Blaster Cinema 2 with a 2.1 speaker system, an on-board Killer E2400 LAN port, USB type-C ports, a media card reader, a two-year part replacement and shipping warranty, and lifetime labor support.

The Origin EVO15-S is available now from the official store, starting at $2,271.

An Alienware m16 gaming laptop in use on a desk, playing Baldur's Gate III.

Gaming can be a lot of fun, but if you're the sort of person who doesn't want to deal with a big gaming desktop, then going for a gaming laptop makes a lot of sense. Of course, you aren't going to get as much power under the hood as you would with a desktop, and it might cost a bit more, but you do get a lot of mobility and an included screen in the process. Either way, modern gaming laptops have become really great, and even the budget-oriented stuff can play some of the best PC games out there.

To that end, we've gone out and collected some of our favorite gaming laptop deals out there. On the other hand, if you don't want something that yells "gaming laptop," check out some of these other laptop deals that include more traditional-looking laptops with some gaming specs.

NortonLifeLock 360 Deluxe -- $35, was $90

Norton products are a firm fixture amongst the best antivirus software for good reason. They're simple to use and typically cover all the devices you could need to protect. In the case of NortonLifeLock, you get so much more than just antivirus protection too. The software package covers up to five devices at once meaning it will happily work on your Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS systems all at once without a problem. That means all your devices will be regularly monitored for any nefarious files or any other potential issues relating to malware or similar. Real-time protection means there's nothing you need to do other than keep an eye out for any alerts from the service. It's great peace of mind but Norton LifeLock 360 Deluxe goes further than that.
