EA Access will be free next week on Xbox One

EA Access, a subscription service that allows Xbox One users to play some of the publisher’s biggest releases, has become a significantly better value since it originally launched in 2014. For $5 a month, you have unlimited access to Titanfall, Battlefield Hardline, FIFA 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you’re still not sure whether or not to give the service a try, EA is offering a free trial next week.

“Get ready for the release of Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 by binging on the original,” says Xbox’s Will Tuttle. “Your characters earned carry over — plus EA Access members get 10% off EA games, and get to play GW2 before it hits shelves.”

The timing of this announcement was certainly designed to get players hooked on PopCap’s shooter. Garden Warfare 2 is currently in open beta, which ends on January 18, the day before the EA Access free week begins. It includes access to the new “Herbal Assault” mode, as well as new characters like “Captain Deadbeard” and “Kernel Corn.” Because your unlocks from the original game carry over into the sequel, it will be interesting to see how many trial users marathon Garden Warfare to get a leg up on the competition.

This isn’t the only recent news regarding EA Access. The service also made its way to PC as “Origin Access,” offering several of the same games as the console program in addition to PC exclusives like SimCity and The Sims 3. Sony has thus far not agreed to include EA Access on PlayStation systems, calling it a poor value back in 2914.

EA Access will be free for all Xbox Live Gold users from January 19 until January 24. Any progress you make in the games will be carried over if you decide to sign up for a subscription.

An internal memo from Microsoft confirmed that Bobby Kotick, the controversial CEO of Activision Blizzard, will leave the company on December 29.

Bobby Kotick has been CEO of Activision Blizzard -- the company behind popular game franchises like Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Crash Bandicoot, and Diablo -- since 1991 and is one of the most derided executives in the video game industry. Workplace conditions at companies owned by Activision Blizzard were problematic during his reign, with this all coming to a head in a 2021 lawsuit that exposed lots of misconduct, some of which allegedly applied to Kotick. He's stayed with the company through all that and is now leaving following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

One of the year’s biggest sleeper hits is now on Xbox Game Pass

We've learned about which games are coming to Xbox Game Pass between now and December 15, and it's an awesome batch. Some titles are hitting Microsoft's subscription service the day they launch over the next couple of weeks, but the biggest standout in this group of games is one of 2023's biggest sleeper hits: Remnant 2 from Gunfire Games and Gearbox Entertainment. The best part is that it hit the service today.

Remnant II is a multiversal Soulslike shooter that was released on PC and consoles in July. Although it flew under the radar before release, Remnant II was a surprise hit, selling 2 million copies within two months of launch. In particular, we praised the game's compelling boss design as well as its first DLC pack for going bigger and bolder in scope. It's also a looter shooter with rougelite elements, so if you're looking for a new game that will keep you engaged for dozens of hours during the holidays, this sleeper hit is a great choice. Its predecessor, 2019's Remnant: From the Ashes, is also available via Xbox Game Pass now if you want to see where this series began.

One of the best games of the year is finally coming to Xbox next month

Larian Studios confirmed that the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate 3 will still be coming out this year by announcing its December release window.

"Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release," Larian Studios stated on X (formerly Twitter). There's no specific release date yet, but Larian's tweet reveals when we'll learn more. "We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere of the exact release date," the developer teased. Geoff Keighley's video game award show takes place every December and is always full of announcements in addition to awards. The show is shaping up to be a big one for Baldur's Gate 3, as it's nominated in nine categories -- including Game of the Year and Best RPG -- and will have its December release date revealed there.
