Watch: Starz releases racy trailer for new series The Girlfriend Experience

Sundance Film Festival attendees will have the chance to check out the first four episodes of The Girlfriend Experience, an upcoming Starz series, on Saturday. With the studio having that rare opportunity, it has now released a new trailer for the drama from executive producer Steven Soderbergh.

Based on the acclaimed filmmaker’s 2009 film of the same name, The Girlfriend Experience follows Christine (played by Riley Keough), a second-year law student who takes on an unlikely job: working as a high-end call girl. As we can see in the trailer, the series will delve into her experiences on the job, including the risks.

“Does this kind of work ever make you scared?” a man asks at one point. Although Christine says no, we see that she doesn’t have everything as “under control” as she indicates. She’s shown escaping from at least one man, dealing with another man that she says is trying to “discredit” her, and arguing with another woman about why she would do “something so stupid.”

The series has an interesting format, with episodes being just 30 minutes compared to the hour-long episodes more typical of dramas. Soderbergh edited the series “like a movie,” telling the story over six and a half hours, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht explained in an interview with Deadline.

“Although there is a really strong narrative all the way through, this is almost like little slices of this young woman’s experience that just build, and build, and build, and build,” said Albrecht. “So instead of having to craft within each episode a complicated story, the story is really told as pretty much one person’s story.”

The storytelling style may work out to make The Girlfriend Experience ideal for binge-watching. Albrecht admits that his own inadvertent binge influenced Starz’s decision to release all 13 episodes at once on its On Demand and Starz Play platforms. “What we’re doing is we’re highlighting the unique features of premium, which is different than streaming and different than broadcast of ad-supported basic (cable),” he said.

Along with Soderbergh, the series is executive produced by Philip Fleishman, Gary Marcus, and Jeff Cuban, as well as co-creators Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan. The latter pair wrote and directed the first season.

The Girlfriend Experience premieres on Starz platforms on April 10.

ten best tv shows of 2024 so far ranked tokyo vice season 2 1

Considering that we're not even halfway through the year yet, it may seem premature to start naming the best TV shows of 2024. Regardless, 2024 has already proven to have a great crop of new and returning shows for television fans, especially from streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. When the major studios are cutting back on content, the original streaming series are the ones that challenge our expectations while reminding us that television is a medium that can offer more rewarding stories than a two-hour film.

It's too soon to declare this to be the definitive list of TV shows for 2024, especially since we have a full seven months to go before the end of the year. By that time, our top 10 will likely feature a very different lineup of shows. But at this moment in time, these are our picks for the 10 best TV shows of 2024 so far.

Boy Kills World’s Dawid Szatarski on making the action movie’s insane fight scenes
A man hangs out with two guys in Boy Kills World.

Revenge is a dish best served ... with a cheese grater? Well, at least that's how the saying goes in Boy Kills World, the new martial arts action-comedy from director Moritz Mohr. Bill Skarsgård stars a Boy, a deaf and mute orphan who vows to kill Hilda van der Koy (Famke Janssen), the leader of an authoritarian regime who murdered his family. Under the tutelage of the mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian), Boy becomes a trained killer who will stop at nothing until he has his vengeance.

Boy Kills World is an ultraviolent ride with elaborate fight sequences and vicious kills, including a kitchen duel with that pesky cheese grater. Boy Kills World channels the spirit of John Wick, the martial arts of Korean action movies, the violence of a Street Fighter video game, and the aesthetic of Japanese anime for an action-packed revenge thriller.

A man puts his fists up and prepares for a fight.

We're living through something of an action movie renaissance, which means that it's a great time to be a fan of those kinds of movies. John Wick and the Mission: Impossible franchise have kick-started an entire wave of knockoffs, and while not all of these movies are great, the fact that we're getting so many that have basically nothing to do with superheroes is definitely a good sign.

Boy Kills World is one recent example of a gonzo, irreverent action movie about one man's obsessive drive for revenge. If you saw that movie and felt like you were picking up everything that it put down, we're recommending three more that are just as great ... and almost as bloody.
