According to Variety, director Joseph McGinty Nichol (AKA- McG) is in talks to helm a live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe. The original film from the ’80s was itself an underwhelming adaptation of the classic cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, based off of Mattel’s popular toy line.
Given that McG kicked off his directorial career with a somewhat underwhelming reboot (Charlie’s Angels), and then a more underwhelming sequel to that underwhelming reboot (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle), you could forgive fans for being less than optimistic.
That said, the director has turned out some fairly well respected films, too. We Are Marshall and Terminator Salvation come to mind. And however you feel about McG, no one has signed on the dotted line as of yet, so this is all very preliminary.
The director is currently busy filming The Babysitter, a coming-of-age horror story which stars Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, and Hana Mae Lee.
Perhaps the more burning question at this point is: Who will play He-Man? Though no one would accuse the original 1987 film of being a masterpiece, it’s tough to imagine an actor that embodies the physical traits of the character better than Dolph “if he dies, he dies” Lundgren. We’d suggest Chris Hemsworth, but he’s busy playing another mythical and muscled hero, one that — he says — is too similar for him to consider the role.
The Masters of the Universe reboot has yet to set a release date and details are very scarce for the time being. We’ll keep you updated as information becomes available.
