Nintendo’s first mobile game Miitomo hits the U.S. on March 31

You may have been a little disappointed when Nintendo launched Miitomo, its first mobile game, only in Japan. The limited launch was even more upsetting for Nintendo fans when you factored in just how highly-anticipated its entrance into the mobile app market was. Thankfully, you won’t have to wait much longer to play the game, though, as Miitomo is set to launch in the U.S. on March 31.

The app will be available on both Android and iOS, and will offer users the option to import a Mii from the Wii U or a 3DS using a QR code. The company is also launching My Nintendo on March 31, a program that will reward you for buying games digitally and using Nintendo apps.

Miitomo is all about building your own Mii, and then answering the questions Nintendo poses. Normally, the questions are meant to be interesting or funny, so that you’ll share both the question and the answer with all your friends. In theory, the social aspect will spark more comments and reactions. The more conversations you take part in, the more coins you get. The coins can be used to buy clothes and accessories for your Mii. You can unlock some of the rarer items by playing a pinball-style mini game, which itself is unlocked with coins, or — you guessed it — real money.

Another big part of the app is Miifoto, which basically lets you take photos of your Mii in different poses, with different backgrounds, or with backgrounds that you’ve imported. These shots are perfect for sharing on social media.

Nintendo is banking on the addictive qualities of the game to make Miitomo a success. The app has already been downloaded a million time in Japan, which is a good indication of its potentially success. It remains to be seen how well Miitomo will do internationally, but Nintendo fans are a passionate bunch.

Grounded and Pentiment are the first Xbox games to come to Nintendo Switch

During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, we learned about two of the Xbox Game Studios titles that are going multiplatform. The games in question are Obsidian Entertainment's Grounded and Pentiment, and the latter will launch tomorrow on Nintendo Switch.

Earlier this year, various leaks and rumors suggested that first-party Xbox exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment could make their way over to competing platforms. Microsoft finally addressed the rumors on February 15, confirming that it planned to bring four of its first-party games to non-Xbox platforms over the course of 2024. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wouldn't say what any of the specific games were at the time, though, stating that "the teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away." It's now clear that Spencer was partially referring to this Nintendo Direct, as two of the games showed up here.
