Making a Murderer’s surprise lawyer star Dean Strang scores his own docuseries

Netflix’s true-crime docuseries Making a Murderer set off shock waves when it debuted in December 2015, and the aftershocks haven’t stopped yet. Covert Media is tapping into the hype, naming former Steven Avery defense attorney Dean Strang as host of its upcoming legal docuseries, Road to Justice, reports Deadline.

As one of the lawyers on the high-profile case, Strang became famous among the legions of Making a Murderer fans. He, alongside co-counsel Jerome Buting, weighed in on the controversial trial and attempted to prove that Avery was wrongfully convicted of murder. Their evidence was so compelling that over 250,000 people signed a petition to free Avery, and hackers claiming to be involved with Anonymous pledged to release new evidence.

Strang will attempt to strike an equally powerful chord as host of Dean Strang: Road to Justice. Like Making a Murderer, the docuseries will center on legal matters and highlight problems within the criminal justice system. One key difference, however, is the fact that Road to Justice will examine multiple cases over the course of its eight episodes.

“We are thrilled to be working with Dean on this landmark series that will shine a light on many other extraordinary cases where the criminal justice system has failed,” said Saul Goldberg, head of unscripted television for Covert Media. The exec also highlighted Strang’s work, calling him “a leading voice in the fight for justice.”

The series, which is currently in development, is being described as “shot in vérité style” and is being compared to Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. In addition to serving as host, Strang will executive produce with Goldberg. Road to Justice is Covert Media’s first TV project.

So far, the docuseries has not yet found a home at a network, nor has a timeline for release been announced. In the meantime, however, fans can keep tabs on developments in Avery’s case, as well as Strang and Buting’s national speaking tour.
