Darkness calls in the Season 3 trailer for Penny Dreadful

The third season of Penny Dreadful will premiere next month, and the dark fantasy series appears to be going even darker for its next arc of horror-inspired adventures.

Showtime has released a new trailer for the third season of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated series, and it features a few familiar faces joining the show for the upcoming season — and some terrifying creatures, too.

Created, written, and executive produced by three-time Academy Award nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator), Penny Dreadful unfolds in turn-of-the-century London and features a cast of characters from classic horror fiction, including Dorian Gray, Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

After two critically acclaimed seasons, the third season introduces Tony Award-winning actress Patti LuPone (American Horror Story) as an American therapist treating series regular Vanessa (Eva Green). Hell on Wheels and Last of the Mohicans actor Wes Studi also joins the series as an enigmatic Native American with a connection to one of the other series stars.

Along with this season’s newcomers, the series also brings back show regulars Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton, as well as Simon Russell Beale, Sarah Greene, Rory Kinnear (as Frankenstein’s creature), and Harry Treadaway (as Dr. Frankenstein). Guest stars for the upcoming season include Shazad Latif as Dr. Henry Jekyll.

Penny Dreadful was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards after its first season, and Green was nominated for a Golden Globe Award earlier this year for her portrayal of Vanessa, the series’ heroine. Hartnett, Dalton, and series composer Abel Korzeniowski have all been nominated for awards over the course of the series first two seasons, with Korzeniowski earning two of the series’ Emmy nominations for his musical contributions to the show.

The third season of Penny Dreadful premieres Sunday, May 1, at 10pm ET on Showtime and will run nine episodes.

Vote for Joker in the new trailer for Harley Quinn season 3
Vote Joker in Harley Quinn season 3.

In DC's comic book universe, The Joker once ran for office with a simple campaign slogan: "Vote for me or I'll kill you." It's an oddly compelling argument, in its own way. Now, one of The Joker's animated counterparts is also running for office in the new season of Harley Quinn on HBO Max. And as you can see in the trailer below, Joker has his sights set on becoming Gotham City's next mayor.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer twists the timeline
The cast of The Umbrella Academy.

During the second season of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves family was stuck in the past as they tried to avert an apocalypse. They succeeded, but that success had a big price. Upon their return to the present, the Hargreeves clan discovered that they no longer belonged to the new timeline. The Umbrella Academy itself no longer exists, because Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted an almost entirely different family of superheroes: The Sparrows.

In the new trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3, Sir Reginald is still alive, but he has no idea who the original Hargreeves siblings are. And the Sparrows don't exactly hold back on their cross-temporal siblings. A superhero fight was always inevitable, but it doesn't solve the key problem. The new timeline is violently unstable, and it will collapse in just a few days.

Butcher powers up in a new trailer for The Boys season 3
The cast of The Boys.

One of the key changes that The Boys live-action series made from the comic book that inspired it is that the main characters have no superhuman powers of their own. They're just regular guys and one woman with enhanced strength. Somehow, they've managed to survive two seasons on Prime Video's breakout hit. However, it's time for Billy Butcher and his team to level the playing field.

In the gore-filled new trailer for The Boys season 3, a significant amount of time has passed since the events of season 2. Outwardly, Homelander was humbled by the revelation that he was dating a super Nazi code-named Stormfront. And while Homelander says all of the right things to the media, it's clear that he's losing his mind. It's so obvious that even Homelander's handlers are terrified of him. That's why Butcher has been given the chance to become the very thing he hates the most: A superhuman. But against Homelander, even having powers may not be enough.
