Twenty years ago, I loved the original Harvest Moon and ever since then I've looked and looked for another game I enjoyed as much and every year I was disappointed. I never liked the sequels or the other "similar" games. None came close to the original, in my opinion.
So when Stardew Valley came out I was intrigued. It was so affordable, that I figured it was worth trying, and I am SO glad I did! I fell in love. ConcernedApe fixed all those annoying and pesky things about Harvest Moon and added so much more! There was so much more to do and no rush to do anything--unless you wanted to. I don't really have time to play it that often, but I still play it from time to time. I first got it on the PS4, then I got it on my mac so my daughter and I could use the mods. My daughter wanted a pastel purple bunny, so I even ended up making a recolor mod for the game too--which was a fun challenge. The mods really do expand the game and make it so much more fun. Best yet, ConcernedApe takes ideas from the mods and implements some of them into the game itself!
This game is a true labor of love! I ended up buying this for my phone and my kindle too. But that's the thing, if he had made it really expensive, I may never have tried it to start with and in the end it is so affordable, that I've bought it 4 times over and so ended up spending about as much as I would for one of those big expensive games. Even though I have had 5 game consoles in my life, I have only bought two expensive (~$50 games). I just don't like spending much money on it since I really don't play enough to justify it (yeah, I'm not sure why I bought so many consoles either *shrugs*). So, my point is, I loved it enough and was so happy the maker made it affordable, that I was more than happy to buy multiple copies. So, if you like games that you can play as relaxed or as hectic as you want, this is a great game.
This is actually also a great game for practicing mindfulness too! You can just walk around pet your animals, water your crops, go fishing, go mining, talk with the townspeople, get married, or grind crops and ancient fruit wine and make tons of in-game "money". I think my favorite are the Junimos which are cute little creatures who jump around and harvest all your crops for you, though they can take a while to get--unless you play on a pc/mac and use the Better Junimo's mod (highly recommended). If you love laid back games, try this one, you'll probably love it!
FYI, there is some mature content like drinking alcohol and a guy being drunk, so you may want to read Common Sense Media's review if you want it for your kid. They rate it as 10+, and say that parents say 8+, and kids say 9+.
One last tip, I spent many hours watching DangerouslyFunny on YouTube play this game, or should I say do everything to push the game to its limits--it's great fun and I learned tons about the game that I didn't know.
If you are wondering if you should get it on the kindle or console, each has it's pluses and negatives. The tablet is great because I find harvesting, planting, watering to be SO much easier on the kindle/tablet/phone, than on the computer or console, because you just tap and your tool changes automatically, where you constantly have to change your tool and move, then click, then move then click...yeah, it takes longer on console/computer. But if I could only chose one, I'd choose the computer so I could use the mods--they are that worth it. Have fun!
