Controls:
You have three options to play this game; with the WiiMote sideways, WiiMote/nunchuck combo or Wiimote/nunchuck/balance board combo.
I tested all control methods and found the simple sideway method to be the best. Some may think that using the wiimote with the nunchuck or even balance board will give a more realistic experience in terms of jabs and hooks, but they don't, let me explain, with the wiimote and nunchuck, as you would think, you simply swing them to punch, and that works by default, however, in order to do jabs (punches to the face), you have to move the joystick on the nunchuck upwards and then swing, which can be difficult to use when in the middle of a fight and I found to be a bit confusing; moving the LilMac is easy however, you move the joystick sideways to dodge, down to duck and up to block.
Holding the Wiimote sideways is much easier and makes the game that much more fun to play. You use the D-pad to move, duck and block; same motions, left and right to dodge, down to duck and up to block and you punch with 1 & 2 for left and right. "A" activates star power punches.
Graphics:
Sharp and colourful. That's the best way to describe it. Do not expect EA Fight Night graphics, this is the Wii, but the graphics still look great, I have no complaints, the game looks, sounds and plays like the classic, but with major improvements that do a great job at keeping the game fresh and fun to play.
As with the classic, this version will have you fight different characters to reach a "boss" fighter, that once defeated, will get you to the next round of fighters and so on. There's a career mode, exhibition and head to head.
The game has different fighting circuits with the following fighters:
Minor Circuit:
Glass Joe
Von Kaiser
Disco Kid
King Hippo.
Major Circuit:
Piston Hondo
Beer Hugger
Great Tiger
Don Flamenco
World Circuit:
Aran Ryan
Soda Popinski
Bald Bull
Super Macho Man
Mr. Sand Man
There's also a "Head To Head" mode, which as the name implies, has you go head to head with another human opponent and I must say, is tons of fun, with only a minor flaw, the only playable character in head to head is Little Mac with the name of your personal wii under the tittle. No biggie, because realistically speaking, the game is so much fun that you won't really worry about what the fighter looks like, although, I should mention, there's a meter next to your health bar, that once filled, will give you a super power that will transform your fighter into this huge dude with some mean punches.
In conclusion, if you played the classic, as I did, trust me, you'll fell right at home here; the Wii version did a great job with this awesome franchise and I honestly couldn't ask for more, the graphics, controls and overall experience is a must for fans. New comers will be able to easily pick up the control and get into the ring without a huge learning curve..the game is easy to play and a great deal of fun for the entire family. A+
This Game: I absolutely adore this game. I saw it played on an internet show called Game Grumps, and I was enjoying watching it a lot and wanted to give it a shot! I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to play (they made it look WAY harder than it is!) All of the opponents have a wacky quirk and each of them have a unique move-set and "tell" to let you know when to punch and dodge. I would qualify this as a strategy game, where you time your dodges and hits to achieve victory. It's a great workout of the mind and body if you are throwing your punches with the wiimote and nunchuck. With the gloves you can play with, it makes for quite the immersive experience!
The Gloves:Honestly, I did not expect real boxing gloves or even for them to work 100% perfectly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and fun they were to use! The only hard part is aiming and having to press "a" with your opposite hand since the wiimote is in the back of the glove but this is a very minor complaint. I enjoy stretching and then getting up and being able to actually move and groove while I fight the opponents, it makes it that much more fun and immersive for me. You can't do the right handed star punch, but that's just another small complaint, as you can do a left handed star punch just fine. honestly, I would prefer the gloves over simply holding the controllers because of the immersion factor. I can feel like I am actually there, landing blows and facing off against my wacky opponents. It is a lot of fun, for me at least.
Career mode is very good, some new characters were added but they fit in just fine and add to the content so that's a plus. Multiplayer mode is tons of fun and is where you REALLY get a workout, especially if the two people playing are good at it. I'm glad they don't force motion controls though cuz it'll wear you down if you really get in to your video games like I do. When I get burned out, I just set the control scheme to the old NES days and play without motion controls. When I'm rested, I'm back at it swinging again lol. It would have been pretty neat if they had wifi boxing matches our tournaments. That would just make this game perfect actually but hey, you can't get everything.
Overall I would recommend this game to any fan of the original and super punch out, or any boxing fan. Whether you're a serious boxer or just looking for some casual boxing fun, this is your game. Easy 5 stars from me, like I expected it to be.
