Great game worth the wait for the physical version
Even though I had to wait a couple of extra days for the physical version of this game I'm glad I did since I prefer physical over digital versions of games. Even though it was not posted in the listing it came with a mini art book included which is a nice little bonus. The gameplay is great after playing for hours and hours I kept coming back for more,the way the dungeons randomly generate is great giving you a new challenge every time you play. And since it is a physical version there is nothing quite like being able to share this with friends and family members that also own a switch.

At just over 30 hours now in less than a month, this game is amazing still, and has not gotten old. I love Do not believe the hype that this game is "repetitive." This is absolutely the best game I've played in years.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I saw some negative reviews on here and thought it necessary to chime in, because I don't think it deserves the hate it seems to be getting.

Dead Cells is like a mixture of retro gaming elements and new design/polish. It retains many elements from retro series such as Metroid and Castlevania (gameplay), retention of certain upgrades ( like in Zelda 1, with heart containers and sword upgrades remaining upon death). It contains newer more modern design with its polish and randomly generated levels. I don't really see the comparison to Dark Souls other than just being generally challenging.

I'm not a huge fan of rogue likes (mostly binding of Isaac is my experience there) but I have enjoyed the 3+ hours I've played so far of this, the gameplay is fun & addicting, the platforming is solid, the weapons are unique and interesting and dying is more fun than it is frustrating. Murdering enemies is fun as hell, the weapons and upgrades are interesting. So far I haven't experienced any glitches or bugs, and the game runs smoothly.

Overall, I recommend buying it even for non rogue like/platformer fans. So far this is one of my favorite games on my Switch, and you can't beat the price.

I've not found myself losing track of time while playing a game like this in a very long time.

This game is also very challenging. You will die, a lot. But, you'll never die because of anything that is unfair to the player. Every single time you die, it is because of your own mistakes and offers a learning experience to you for your next run. Every time you reach a new level, it feels like a massive accomplishment. And as you get better at mastering the game's mechanics, the game rewards you for your progression, by giving you bonuses for skillful play between each level.

If you're a fan of roguelikes, this is a must-have game.

I bought this game based on a review on youtube and thought it looked beautiful and the gameplay looked reminiscent of my favorite handheld castlevania games so I gave it a chance. I LOVE IT! The first couple hours took some getting used to, seeing as I wasn't used to perma-death roguelike gameplay. But once I understood that death is part of the challenge, and the leveling up over time makes each run easier, I found a lot of fun to be had in the difficulty and "grinding". The random level generation makes these first couple hours fresh and fun, and I've been playing this game nonstop for a couple weeks now. If Castlevania is your bag, I'd definitely suggest this game!

This game has not left my switch since I bought it. The replay value is off the charts, and it feels like it is *made* for the switch. I can pick it up, play half a level, hit power on the switch, and come back an hour later, and its INSTANTLY there.

Its definitely a game that once you get a routine down, its a lot easier....but then you turn the difficulty up one notch, and all of a sudden you are getting your butt handed to you.

This game FORCES you to 'get gud', but does so in a fairly natural way, and all of a sudden you look back at your first few playthroughs and realize how much better you are at the game.

This game is so addicting! Very good game to jump in and out quickly as you always start in the action with minimal downtime. Because of this, it's a game that you'd probably appreciate more as a digital copy unless you're a collector obviously. I do have to say though the cover art makes it totally worth having a physical copy.

As for the game itself, I have never played a pixelated game that has controls this fluid and satisfying. The game feels very good and you rarely feel that you die from unexplainable or bad mechanics. Most of the time it's skill and skill alone that determines life and death.

If you pick this up beware, it will be hard to put it down.

It is not for the faint of heart for sure. Very fast paced combat in a lot of zones and small mistakes can certainly lead to a quick death. I've had a lot of hours having fun with this game, and of course deaths that make me want to cry but you pick up and keep going.

One thing I like but also don't like is the weapons and how they work. The weapon drops are random from the list of items you have unlocked, so if you know what you are doing, you will unlock only the weapons you like and you'll have a much higher chance to get only those items, but of course you dont always know how useful things are before you unlock them. I took some risks with unlocking and some were absolutely worth it, and some were very detrimental. The other thing is that you NEED to unlock some number of weapons to unlock the character upgrades. I would love if you could deactivate some/all the weapons that you dont want to use, but without that ability, then that just means planning ahead is crucial to get further in the game as the game does ramp up in difficulty fairly quickly as you progress.
