Just watched this yesterday on my newly upgraded home theater setup. I've seen it called 11.2 others call it 7.2.4. Seven ground level channels, 2 subwoofers, 4 height speakers. Anyway, even though this movie is from 1986, it's been remixed for Atmos and just as I suspected, it turned out to be a great Atmos demo with lots of jets flying past you, at your level and overhead. The low frequency vibrations of the jet engines are there occasionally in your subs but not overdone. See attached photo, note the fine print at the top - "mixed specifically for Dolby Atmos..."The blu ray is only $14.96. That's a bargain. I guess they've put this out primarily to support and promote the sequel. Hours of special features, much of which is brand new in 4k with recent interviews of the principals discussing the sequel.This movie won Oscars - back when Oscars were awarded for excellence rather than racial and LGBTQ quotas. Best original song winner, nominated for best film editing, best sound, best effects and best sound effects editing. Well deserved. The music was great, especially Take My Breath Away and Danger Zone. The interviews with the editors were particularly interesting. They should have won the Oscar because they put this together from hundreds of hours of raw aerial footage and apparently created much of the story out of thin air (so to speak).Highly recommended.

Tony Scott’s 1986 film, “Top Gun,” is a fun action movie that follows F-14A Tomcat pilots at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (later re-named Fighter Tactics Instructor program) at Miramar, CA, dubbed TOPGUN. Scott based the film on a screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., who adapted an article Ehud Yonay wrote for California Magazine in 1983 titled “Top Guns.” The film follows in the tradition of Tom Wolfe’s book and Philip Kaufman’s movie, “The Right Stuff,” though without as much meditation on the nature of the “right stuff” and its downsides. The film stars Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Kelly McGillis as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Val Kilmer as Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Anthony Edwards as Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Tom Skerritt as CDR Mike “Viper Metcalf, Michael Ironside as Lt. CDR Rick “Jester” Heatherly, Tim Robbins as Lt. JG Sam “Merlin” Wells, Clarence Gilyard as Lt. JG Marcus “Sundown” Williams, and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw.

The overall plot of “Top Gun” blends elements of 1980s action films with the plot structure of a sports movie, including use of montages and a rivalry between Maverick and Iceman. Interestingly, there is no trophy at TOPGUN as it’s a training school, but that wouldn’t make for as engaging a film without some form of conflict. Also, several of the actions throughout the film would have turned the Cold War hot had they happened in real life. Otherwise, the aerial footage is brilliant, using actual Navy planes in carefully choreographed flights. Paired with Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and Harold Faltermeyer’s soundtrack, the result is a high-octane spectacle.

The film’s legacy included the television series “JAG” (and, by extension, the “NCIS” spinoffs). In fact, early in the production of “JAG,” the television studio re-used much of the stock footage from “Top Gun” as it was still some of the best footage over a decade later. Even elements of Maverick’s backstory influenced that of Harmon Rabb in “JAG.” Further, a “Top Gun” sequel is due later this year, so this is a great way to add the original to your home movie collection.

Well I wonder if I can talk about Top Gun objectively... Well... nope I can't do it. I love this movie to death! It was my first non Star Wars movie
that I said was a favorite. I first fell in love in 1986, I was 10 years old, my dad had the VHS in his den, I popped it in this VHS that had a plane on the cover sheet and less than 5 mins later I was hooked. The roar of the F 14 engine! The music! The hot shot fly boy mentality. I was all in. After that day I watched Top Gun every Saturday and Sunday morning at least twice for probably 2 years straight. As a kid I was, well I still am a military plane enthusiast, but when I was a kid I really wanted to be a fighter pilot. I wanted to be a naval aviator and this movie really spoke to me. So because of that to me, as a kid, it was flawless.As an adult... well I can see some of the flaws like the MIG 28's are just US T-38/F 5's but I understand why. and I don't care, this movie is just a hell of a good time!

Everyone is great. Anthony Edwards is great. Val Kilmer is doing Val Kilmer things. James Tolkan doing JamesTolkan things. Kell Mcginnis... well I don't think I was ever really a big fan of hers in this movie but I don't hater her so it's a push.This is just a fun 80's action movie...well to be honest it probably is more of a romantic comedy running around as an action film but as far as 80's love stories go it isn't too shabby and watching that that mushy stuff it is worth it for all that sweet plane action!! The F 14 was the gloriously filmed this movie, turning and burning into my young heart. Hell even thirty years later I still get chills when i see that plane in the movie(and real life). Speaking of thirty years, this movie's effects still hold up pretty well, probably because most of the visuals are practicals or models so you don't get too much of that bad and dated CG that happens a lot with older films.

Bottom line: This is vintage Tom Cruise owning the big screen like only he can. If you are a kid from the 80's then you probably already know this movie word for word but for anyone who hasn't seen this yet you need to fix that right now. Watch Top Gun! trust me you will love it and if the government trust me... maybe you should.
