Sennheiser HD 660S2
Dive deeper into legendary sound.
Enjoy your music on a completely new level. An intimate, relaxed sound signature combines with outstanding precision and exceptional comfort — and now, extended sub bass — for a deeply moving experience.
Your new desert island headphone.
Every high-end headphone has its own unique personality. What if you could only own one?
Ever felt goosebumps from sound so real, it was as if the source was in the room with you? The non-fatiguing HD 660S2 gives people who love music an intimate way to connect more deeply with their favorite songs and artists. Breathtaking resolution and precision take you closer than ever to instruments and vocalists. Yet the sound is natural and balanced, never harsh or brash.
This warm, inviting signature combined with extended sub bass makes listening uniquely pleasant and rewarding. And with comfort this good, it practically begs you to keep going for endless sessions. That’s how HD 660S2 combines the best of many worlds to give you an intimate experience you won’t want to live without.
Sub bass expands the entire sound.
Double the sub bass heightens your listening experience.
Traditionally, audiophiles don’t get too excited about sub bass. It can easily get sloppy or boomy and become a distraction. And that’s a shame — because there’s so much more to experience here than just the gut punch of a kick drum. Did you know the low B of a 5-string bass vibrates at 30.9 Hz? Or that the lowest note on a concert piano comes in at 27.5 Hz? And of course, extended sub bass makes bass-heavy genres sound fantastic, too.
And that’s the magic trick here. In doubling the sound pressure at the very lowest frequencies, we’ve nevertheless retained extraordinary precision and balance throughout the sub bass, mid-bass, and beyond. Most impressive is how this affects the listening experience. Extension on the low end changes everything — by creating more space for the sound. Against a deeper backdrop, highs feel more brilliant, the soundstage deeper, emotions stronger.
They feel as great as they sound.
Comfy slippers, your favorite jeans, the HD 660S2. Some things just feel awesome to wear.
The velour earpads of the HD 660S2 can only be described as a tactile pleasure. With just the right amount of tension for proper acoustic positioning and supple padding, the headband won’t draw attention away from your music, either. As an open-back design, the HD 660S2 gives your ears an extremely comfortable climate, even for super-long sessions.
The low total weight and ergonomic headband rule out any potential discomfort on top of your head as well. Combined with excellent build quality made in Ireland, you’ll quickly grow attached to a listening experience that’s as physically pleasing as the warm, non-fatiguing sound at its heart.
How do you one-up a line of legends?
Some of the most neutral headphones in the world are a tough act to follow.
As far back as the HD 580, high-end Sennheiser headphones have inspired generations with their balanced, natural reproduction. Recognized as benchmarks for neutral audiophile sound, the HD 600, HD 650, and HD 660S all share visible and audible DNA with the HD 660S2. The revised coil of the S2, for instance, now matches the 300-ohm impedance of the legendary HD 600 & HD 650. This new coil also provides higher magnetic force and electrical dampening for cleaner impulse response.
The surround is now more compliant, too, dropping the resonant frequency to 70 Hz. Considerable effort also went into optimizing the airflow around the transducer. There’s more sensitivity over the entire frequency spectrum because the magnet´s air gap works more efficiently now. Taken together, these measures result in even greater precision, speed, and resolution — with double the sound pressure at the lowest frequencies.

Product Description
From thundering timpani, to the melodic sound of a guitar, the impressive singing voice of your favorite artist, or the beat of electronic dance music, nothing creates drama like powerful bass. Ideal for music lovers, the non-fatiguing, high-end HD 660S2 now delivers even more impact and emotion. Our engineers optimized the HD 660S's surround, transducer airflow, and coil to double the sound pressure at the lowest octaves. You can feel the lowest note on the piano (27.5 Hz) or the kick of the bass drum (45-60 Hz) as if you were there at the recording studio, allowing you to pick out individual instruments and discover new sonic details. The relaxed sound and open-black design make it an extremely comfortable headphone that is also suitable for long listening sessions. The headphone's warm, relaxed sound is reflected in its timeless design and elegant bronze accents. With warm tuning, smooth treble and strong bass, the standard-setter for extended listening is now also the standard for extended bass.

SOUND:
These headphones sound better to me than the rest of the 600 series simply due to their better sub-bass performance. They have a pretty wide soundstage, have excellent instrument separation and sound good with all music I have thrown at them. The mids perform excellently, just as the rest of the HD600 series, and the treble is sparkly and nimble but not fatiguing. These are a good, balanced, warm sounding pair of headphones that are well worth the price that I bought them for, however I could not recommend these for $600 as this price forces competition with a higher class of headphones.
COMFORT:
These headphones are the most comfortable pair I own, with nice soft earpads and a perfect amount of pressure that gets a good acoustic seal over my ears. My head is on the larger side, so as to the issue of clamping force, I really did not feel that they clamped too tightly. These are the kind of headphones that I could wear comfortably all day and forget I even have them on.
DRIVING EQUIPMENT:
To those that have mentioned an unimpressive performance from these headphones, when used without a headphone amplifier or properly specified piece of equipment, these headphones tend to sound a bit soulless, empty, or a bit muddy. However, the great thing about the HD600 series is that they tend to scale very well with good sound equipment. The difference in sound that an entry level Schiit DAC+Amp stack made was well worth it and really made these phones come to life. This does mean, however, that you should also consider the cost of an amplifier and DAC unit as a cost included with these headphones, so at minimum another $200 added onto the already expensive price. There are many other good options for headphones that are easier to drive and do not require a dedicated amp for this price range, so if this isn't for you, I would look elsewhere.
Overall a great sound albeit a bit overpriced at MSRP.
The stage has depth and height, though it's not as wide as some I've heard. I was able to make the stage wider by boosting 4800Hz a little bit with EQ. But it wasn't worth it, in my opinion. The stock tonality is too good to mess with. The imaging is outstanding. Every voice and instrument is well-defined, individuated, and has its own reliable spot in the 3D soundstage. These are great headphones for gaming as well as music.
Extreme bassheads may want to boost a low shelf EQ filter centered at 40Hz by maybe 5dB. It doesn't need much to be what many people would consider too much. I do usually add some bass extension EQ to my headphones, but these are plenty low and loud enough for me without it. The kick drums punch nice and hard, too.
I use them with my PC and a desktop amp, but they work fine from my phone, too. The only reason I could see not to buy these is that they are pretty expensive. But I think it will be a long time before I get an itch to buy another set of headphones. These are perfectly satisfying, and provide a beautiful and emotional musical experience.
The transducer is warm and open with exceptionally neutral mids, resulting in clear vocals and instrumentals. With higher output levels, the mid-highs can become a bit harsh so I suggest cutting them with an EQ. Also the distortion threshold is so ridiculously high that your eardrums would probably pop before it crosses the 1% threshold. It's amazing how clear these headphones sound at higher output volumes. But for how little distortion there is, the soundstage leaves a lot to be desired. Even with the open back design, the soundstage is limited by the 38mm transducer size where it's competition has all moved on to bigger transducer sizes. It is easy to live with at the sale price, but I would not recommend it at full retail.
One thing that should be very clear though, this is not a headphone for traveling, or for office use, or for gaming, or for anything else other than sitting at your personal desk, listening to music. That's it. Kinda niche but it is what it is. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not so it isn't for everyone. The target audience is so incredibly small that this headphone gets lots of poor-average reviews on various headphone rating sites because of how small it's target use-case is. Comfort-wise, it is enough to wear all-day but tends to fit smaller heads more comfortably. The padding is ample and can be easily removed for cleaning or replaced.
As for Pre-amp/DAC suggestions, if you have budget leftover, I would go for something like a FiiO K7 or K5, or an iFi Zen V2, or TempoTec M3 (in order of decreasing price). There are other options but I went with a FiiO K7 and do not regret it.
TLDR;
Again. This headphone is pretty much a really expensive way to listen to music. That's about it.
Top reviews from other countries
Neewer nw-3000: These are cheap but actually worthy of mention. They sound sort of muffling. However, I went through a process of making careful equalizer adjustments while switching between these and quality headphones, and I found that I could make them sound like something approaching quality. They actually win over all these others with respect to looks. They are a knock off of the classic Sony MDR line of headphones, but actually look better. The stitching is tight and impeccable. I twist them all around and drop them, and there is not a tear. The headband adjuster is metal, and it has numbers and lines. There is a nice silver trim. The headband is wide and thick, and it doesn't bother my bald head. They fit perfectly snug. I use them for video conferencing because they can twist and be worn on one ear only. They are good for watching educational videos and presentations.
AudioTechnica M50x: These are good-ol' classics. They are portable and can be plugged into anything. It's a pleasant sound profile, and I love the way they twist and bend for the perfect snug fit.
Beyerdynamic DT770-80ohm: For me, these are still my best-sounding headphones. I listen to a lot of symphonic music, and these are nicely analytical. I can have an ideal sonic look-around at details coming from the lowest double bass to the highest flute. However, they're not as comfortable for me as they are for others. I find that there's not enough clamping pressure. They're bulky and put too much pressure on the top of my head. Others with glasses and a lot of hair, I think, like the comfort of these a lot.
Sennheiser HD 660S2: These are light and snug. They break in perfectly. I teach online with them on, and I can wear them all day without my ears getting hot. I hear myself talking like I'm not even wearing headphones. They are perfectly open-backed. Sennheiser, with these, abandoned the strictly neutral sound profile. They extend far down into the low end without messing up the sound of everything else. If Beyerdynamic ones offer a perfect middle-row position, these Sennheiser ones put you right up front. This can be good and bad. Anyway, if I had to keep one pair, it would have to be these.
