Tons of Lore, Slow Paced FPS

Tons of Lore, Slow Paced FPS
This game is a survial first person shooter. Has own self contained story; no need to play the previous games. It's set in a post nuclear war and a linear experience. You face against other humans and mutated animals. It goes semi-open world as you make pit stops from city to city. There are resource and ammo gathering. These are limited depending on what difficulty level set.Crafting. There are crafting station for upgrades and on-field crafting for quick resource items like health packs and knives.Health are gained through health packs you collect or craftYou need to maintain your weapons, and clean them for maximum accuracy and damage.Due to limited resources, it's more stealth based than run-and-gunYou have to follow a compass on your wrist instead of an arrow or marker on screen. It doesn't point north instead towards your objective. You may get lost during exploration as it's not 100% reliable.Story/Plot: You're a guy named Artyom. Used to live pre nuclear war and miss the good old days. Everyone is living underground to avoid radiation and stay safe. You go up to the surface to find civilization. Eventually you get banned from from your city, and go city to city to find the right community to live with, and maybe save civilians of the old city you used to live in. There are time skips, each of the 4 major location you visit represent 4 different seasonsFun discovering how different areas have variety of belief system and cultures. The group that you're with give a lot of banter, backstory and character development. It can be slow paced if you're not into lore and just want to shoot things.Story can last you 20+ hours depending on difficulty setting selected and how much you explore. There is a good and bad ending.Graphics are good, but has some dark brown, and black color scheme to it. Monster/mutated creature designs are great. Like how there are subtle animations like having to wipe off debris and dust from your gas mask. All cool action sequences are during cutscenes. Makes me miss QTEsSound is really good. Best played with a headset or surround sound system for better detection of directional sound of incoming enemiesOverall, good slow paced first person shooter with a lot of lore behind it.

Loved it. Gameplay's a little clunky at times, but the first two games were clunky and that's part of the charm. If you liked those, you'll like this. It's not open world, so don't expect it to be. There are optional side quests and random collectibles, but overall it's a story driven game. Super minimal. Like the first two games, there's little to no HUD so the game feels pretty immersive. You will have to interact with NPCs and sit through a lot of dialogue at times, but again, that ends up making the game more immersive, and helps you connect with the characters and the game world. Artyom doesn't talk, which gets weird when NPC's ask him to respond to them or give his input on quests...but he never talked in the first two, so I guess they're consistent. Not for everyone, but for those who loved 2033 and Last Light, this will not disappoint.

SO surprised by the increased quality and scale of game the devs at 4A were able to implement here. This is definitely their most ambitious project and one that deserves all the praise it can get against the controversy of the Epic Store exclusivity deal. Playing on my 4K Tv and its looks absolutely gorgeous as well. Definitely pick this up and give it a try, even if you are new to the series.

Ignore all the 'boring' and 'no action' reviews here, this is a quality game that doesn't hold your hand and expects you to trek into the wasteland on your own. The most alluring part of the game is definitely the atmosphere it sets; when you step out into the first open-world level, you'll feel lost and alone. But as you explore each derelict location in search of valuable loot, you gain your footing in the world and become stronger with each enemy encounter. By the end, you'll be feeling like a real post-apocalyptic soldier. This game doesn't really depart from the original Metro formula but expands it instead. The only difference is that claustrophobia the series is well known for is switched with an intense fear of the open wastelands you get to explore.

One of the strengths of this series is the way it generates and holds a sense of atmosphere. Another is that it doesn't just keep doing the same things over and over again. While there are certainly some callbacks to the first two games (Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light) this game strikes out in a new direction that affords a great excuse for more variety in the environments. The feeling of isolation that has so far characterized the series is tempered with what felt like chattier radio conversations and more sequences with companion NPCs. If anything this enhances the feeling of isolation during the sequences where you find yourself cut off and alone.

The developers were very careful not to mess with things that worked so the weapon variety and feel is solid and familiar, but the whole economy-based-on-bullets has been done away with, replaced by a much more intuitive scavenging system. When a defeated enemy drops a weapon, you now have the option to strip it of it's accessories and upgrades in the field, making those accessories and upgrades available to install on your own weapons later on. (Of course you can also choose to swap your current weapon with the one the enemy dropped).

The stealth aspect of the game felt a little more forgiving this time around, though I can't say whether that's a difficulty balance or rose colored memories. Stealth and close quarters combat are essential to the game as depending on the difficulty ammunition and supplies are scarce and you absolutely can find yourself out of bullets and facing down an army of mutants.

The story this time around is very well rounded. The overall plot is handled well, never becoming overly complex but serving as a good backdrop for interpersonal relationships and the struggle of making hard choices with little or nothing to go on. The player is encouraged to emotionally invest in the characters in a way that feels organic, and then the game harvests that investment through trial and triumph.

At a certain point in the game I found myself realizing that, for me anyway, this game has gone a long way to scratch the itch for a new Half-Life. It's not quite as invested in the "Sci" part of it's Sci-Fi setting, but in terms of atmosphere, story and likable characters it's holding its own.

Some criticism:
The load times on this game on a PS4 Pro are excruciating.

The game is buggy. That may be the norm these days, but I will never accept that it has to be this way. Developers just aren't being allowed enough time to complete their work. Products ship full of bugs which only wind up getting fixed if enough people complain and the game achieves its sales objectives. It's a fiscally driven mentality that is lowering the integrity of the art.

Aside from multiple game crashes, at one point the auto-save became corrupted. It was at that point that I realized that they had not built a way into the main menu interface to jump directly to a manual save (called a "Quick Save" in the game.) So after the game crashed, tried to reload and crashed again while loading, I had to restart the chapter which meant I had to wait for the entire starting point of the environment to load, THEN I was able to switch to my manual save. The loading times are so long that the process I described above took 20 minutes.

About 3/4 of the way through the game I hit a bug that prevented the weapon select sub menu from coming up when I held down the corresponding button (R1). No amount of reloading or restarting chapters would fix it. I spent about 90 minutes trying to reload, restart the PS4 and even reinstall the game but nothing helped so I had to complete the game handicapped by a glitch.

Random Observations:
I'm not easily unnerved by horror elements in video games, but I have to say the spiders that occasionally crawl over your character's face and arms really got under my skin.

Either Steve Blum doesn't have a very good Russian accent, or I'm so used to the sound of his voice that I just can't accept it coming out of the mouth of a Russian. I seriously laughed out loud the first time I heard it. It sounded like Roger Smith from Big-O poked his head in to say "Previet, Artyom!"

Conclusion:
this game is great and I highly recommend it for anyone who liked the first two games, or just good story-driven first-person shooters in general. I only dinged it one star because it was released with some pretty serious bugs and I only ever review the game as it shipped on the disc.

Honestly I really don’t quite understand these god awful reviews that people write about this game, however by no means it is not a perfect game, quite a few glitches, bugs and frame drops.
I must say this game has such an in-depth when it comes to details, graphic for the most parts are absolutely beautiful, especially the sandstorm in the desert, the interactions with your people not just on the train. Also the weapon sounds it’s one of the best I have heard in quite some time, but not just the guns the whole music and audio of this game is just fantastic.
Great atmosphere, great story telling, love the somewhat open world, fantastic sounds and beautiful graphics.
Please give this game a chance and you will feel the love that the developers put into their game!

This was probably one of the the top 10 games I have ever played as far as the storytelling and atmosphere go. DO NOT listen to these malicious idiots leaving one star reviews! Exodus, should you choose to play it as it is meant to be played - slowly, taking in everything, rather than like some COD style shooter - will amaze you at moments and terrify you at others. A mix of Fallout, STALKER, and Uncharted, Metro:Exodus spits in the face of those who claim single player games are dead. If you want a game which never ends and is basically a glorified time-waster, this game is not for you. But, if you are looking for a game with a captivating story, an atmosphere that can at times be either comparatively gorgeous or chillingly scary, characters who you can genuinely relate to and care for, and lore to the moon, then Metro: Exodus is your game. Is it perfect? No, as no game is. Is it remarkably fresh and entertaining in a sea of dry, same old-same old games? Absolutely! tl,dr: BUY IT, CYKA!
