Instagram on Android gets features for ‘3D Touch’

This past November, Instagram started experimenting with integrating 3D Touch advertisements into their iOS app. Following this venture, the company has continued to make use of the recently trending force sensitive technology behind both 3D Touch and the slightly less advanced Force Touch. Functions spawned from these hardware features can now be triggered via long-pressing the photographs, rather than putting more pressure on them.

3D Touch has been the attention of much praise from Apple following the release of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus which introduced Apple’s target audience to the technology. Force Touch is a more basic variant of the same tech, but used in the Apple Watch. Depending on how hard you press the screen app developers can trigger different ways for their code to respond.

For the social media photo sharing giant, force sensitivity means quick access to its most commonly used features; with slightly more pressure than normal, Instagram users can press on a photo and follow by either dragging their finger to Like, Profile, or Share, depending on their preference. But with the introduction of the technology, and the quick-access functionality brought about from it, the developers have decided long presses can do the same thing. Now anyone with a touch sensitive Android phone (i.e., an overwhelming majority) can get access to the same Instagram features available on Apple’s latest flagship devices.

"3D Touch" on Instagram for Android

We first heard of these features coming to google’s mobile operating system on December 8. While they’re not exactly revolutionary, they show how some developers are struggling to make full use of the force sensitive technology. Touch sensitivity has worked in a similar fashion for a long time now, and we’re likely to see further takes on how to improve the intuitiveness and user experience via touch technology.

Pixel 3a confirmed to get Android 12L even as Google winds down Pixel 3 support

With the announcement of Android 12L, Google shared a list of Pixel phones expected to receive the beta when it began the testing period in December. While the Pixel 3 was understandably absent, Google also didn't include the newer Pixel 3a -- which was taken as an indication that it was likely not going to get the newer Android version when it rolls out. Fortunately, that's not the case, as Google confirmed to Digital Trends over email that it was an oversight and documentation would be updated shortly.

According to Google, the Android 12L beta will be going out to the following Pixel phones: Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a with 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 4a, and Pixel 4.  It will not be coming to the Pixel 3, which received its last guaranteed update with Android 12. The Pixel 3's exclusion is a little weird, though. Launched in May of 2019, Google promises updates for up to three years post-launch. As indicated by the company's Pixel software support list, this means the Pixel 3a should expect major updates through May of 2022.

Instagram (and other Facebook services) suffered an extended outage last week that lasted multiple hours and briefly caused chaos across the internet, particularly in developing countries. Today, the company announced an update coming to its mobile app, letting users know when an outage is experienced.

This test is a U.S.-only one for the most part, and Facebook isn't making any promises that it'll make it permanent, only that it'll be evaluating the results and see if it makes sense to expand it in the future.

New Omoji animated emoji characters have a wide range of customizations to ensure they appeal to everyone, for example, but it’s in the software itself that a lot of work has taken place to make it more inclusive. This includes formatting and appearance changes for text in languages other than Chinese and English, new translations for specific languages including Danish, where Oppo understood it was lacking, and even alterations to the camera app algorithm in the beautification feature to make it more suitable for more people.
