Sony Xperia GX and SX announced for Japan, both ripe for a future international release

Sony Xperia GXSony Mobile has announced a pair of new Xperia smartphones, the GX and the SX, both of which are currently destined for Japan, but they could also be released internationally later this year.

The first is the Xperia GX, which has been previously leaked under the codename Hayabusa and with the model number LT29i. The Hayabusa made an appearance on a roadmap of Sony’s 2012 handsets in January, had prices in both euros and dollars, and a release window of sometime in July.

This points to a future release in both the US and Europe, but according to Sony’s press release, it states the pair are “designed specifically for the Japanese market.” So either Sony has changed its mind, or it’ll be removing a few features to make them compatible with international carriers, and possibly changing the names when doing so.

Lets hope this is the case, as the Xperia GX (pictured above) is another very sleek Sony phone with a 4.6-inch Reality Display HD screen, a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor, 16GB of internal memory and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Its 13-megapixel camera uses Sony’s Exmor R sensor and can shoot HD video, and introduces a new set of features designed to improve low-light performance, including an HDR video mode.

Sony’s second new phone is the Xperia SX, which has a smaller 3.7-inch Reality Display screen, but the same 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor as the GX. It also runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but uses an 8-megapixel camera and has 8GB of internal memory. It’s an interesting small screen/high power smartphone, a combination which makes it standout these days.

Sony Xperia SX

Both devices will connect to Japan’s LTE network and are the first Sony phones to do so, plus the SX is billed as the world’s lightest LTE handset, weighing just 95 grams.

They also include three new Sony apps. The Album app helps share photos through Facebook, as well as quickly cataloging your snaps, and the Movies app provides an IMDb-like database to browse while watching a film.

A Walkman app completes the lineup, and adds audio tweaks including enhanced stereo and bass response, an equalizer and Sony’s xLoud system.

The Xperia SX is listed with a few features usually specific to Japan, including mobile TV and a mobile wallet, which could be removed for international sale. The GX is similar to the Xperia Ion, but its upgraded camera, Android 4.0 software already installed and cool, buttonless design all make it a more attractive proposition.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Sony does modify the GX and SX for launch elsewhere, but for now they’ll both be out in Japan in the summer.
