The Optimus 4X HD will use LG’s new Optimus UI 3.0 Android skin, ready to take on Sense 4.0 and TouchWiz

LG Optimus UI 3.0

Check out our full review of the LG Optimus 4X HD smartphone.

LG has never made a very big deal over its Android user interface, and while many phone fans could name and describe the look of HTC’s, Samsung’s and even Motorola’s efforts to cover up Google’s operating system, just naming LG’s UI presents a considerable challenge.

Not any more though, as LG has issued a press release telling the world that it has given its Android UI a complete overhaul, and that it will now be known as Optimus UI 3.0.

Manufacturer Android skins are a controversial subject, with many hardcore Android fans preferring to use the OS as Google intended, while the average owner-on-the-street either doesn’t know, or doesn’t care, that there is a difference.

LG has called the Optimus UI “faster, simpler, and more convenient” which at least bodes well, and the company will be adding it to all new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices.

New features

Some of the new features include a pattern unlock system to access an oft-used app instantly, a voice controlled shutter for the camera, a burst mode for selecting the best shot from a series of pictures, and the chance to customize the images used for icons and shortcuts.

Additionally, the Quick Memo feature seen on the Optimus Vu has become part of the UI, so notes can be “written” on the screen, saved and shared using social networks or email.

The press release also mentions a simpler version of Optimus UI 3.0 designed for new smartphone owners, which pulls together the most popular apps and features for ease of access. It’s not clear whether this is a setting inside Optimus UI 3.0, and therefore available on all phones, or if it will only be available on LG’s cheaper Android 4.0 phones in the future.

LG is pushing hard to keep pace with its competitors at the moment. HTC has recently updated its Sense UI to version 4.0, and Samsung spent the majority of its Galaxy S III launch event talking about software tweaks, some of which are part of the TouchWiz user interface.

The Optimus UI 3.0 will make its debut on the Optimus LTE 2 — an exciting Galaxy S III challenger with a Snapdragon S4 chip and 2GB of RAM — launching in Korea this week, while everyone else will have to wait for the Optimus 4X HD to get their first look at the new user interface.

LG has confirmed that its quad-core flagship phone and major competitor to the HTC One X and Galaxy S III, will be out in the UK and several other European countries in June, followed by Asia, plus South and Central America later in the year.
