Gallery: Up close with the iPhone 5, Apple’s biggest, thinnest, lightest phone ever

Just a few minutes after 10:00 am PST, nearly all of our suspicions about the new iPhone were confirmed. As Phil Schiller flipped through the slideshow, everyone watching seemed to react like the kid who shook his Christmas presents too much and ruined the surprise. Due in part to a large number of leaks during the production phase, we had a good idea of what was going to be announced today — but now that all the little details are out, there a handful of improvements we didn’t anticipate. You can get a good idea from the photos, but here’s a quick list of some of the standout new specs:

Full Coverage From Apple's 9/12 iPhone 5 Launch Event
  • The iPhone 5 will be 18 percent thinner than the iphone 4S, and will weigh in at 112 grams (20 percent lighter than the 4S)
  • The phone will be a bit longer than older models, with a 4-inch, 1136×640 pixel display. This will allow another row of apps to appear on the first page.
  • Additionally, there will be an improved camera and additional microphones, making for vastly better A/V capture
  • Apple has also decided to ditch the old 30-pin connector in favor of the new “lightning” connector, which is smaller and considerably faster
