Having trouble with Apple Music on your iPad? Here’s how to fix it

If you’ve recently updated your iPad to OS 8.4 and were excited to try out Apple Music, you may run into some trouble. It turns out that, for many users (including us,) Apple Music doesn’t look the same on their iPad as it does on their iPhone … at least not initially. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix: Power your iPad down, and then power it back on. Once you’ve done this, features and options that were once missing will finally be available.

After prompting your iPad for an update to iOS 8.4, it will download, prepare, and install the update, restarting the device in the process. You would think, then, that Apple Music should be good to go at this point. Unfortunately, you’ll likely notice that the ‘For You,’ and ‘Now’ options are missing. Instead, ‘Playlists’ will be broken out into its own option, rather than being folded in to ‘My Music’ as it should be. Compare the two screen shots below. On the left is what the screen may initially look like after an update to iOS 8.4, on the left is what the screen should look like, which requires a restart of the iPad:

Others have noticed this issue, and are participating in threads at Apple’s support community forums. Some have tried closing the app from the taskbar, while others have suggested checking setting to make sure Settings > Music > Show Apple Music is set to ‘ON.’ However, in our experience, shutting the iPad down and restarting it is the only guaranteed way to solve the problem.

Chalk it up to just one more instance where the tech support answer to your problem is “restart the device.” Funny how often that works. Still, the question remains: Why?

You may have to wait a while longer for new iPads
The backs of Apple's iPad Air and iPad Pro, with the tablets place on a table.

Just days ago, the Chinese website IT Home said Apple would announce the launch of its 2024 iPads on Tuesday, March 26. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman — who still believes new iPads will arrive this spring — has debunked this rumor. In other words, we'll probably have to wait a little longer for new Apple tablets to arrive.

Gurman had previously stated that Apple's next-generation tablets would arrive in late March or April.  Of the March 26 rumor, Gurman took to X, formerly Twitter, to say it was "not true."

YouTube TV just got even better on iPhones and iPads
Multiview on YouTube TV on an iPad.

If you use the most popular live-streaming service on an iPhone or iPad, things just got even better. YouTube TV — which boasts more than 8 million subscribers — just pushed multiview live on Apple's mobile devices, as previously promised.

It works basically the same way it does on a television. YouTube TV picks the programs available in multiview, and you get them all at once, with audio coming from one of the shows. Tap another, and the audio switches. And just as before, you can get multiview for sports, news, business, or weather. (Though we definitely don't recommend watching four news channels at once in an election year.) It's just in time for March Madness, which is great, though we hope you'll be able to pick your own games instead of just sticking with the multiple viewing options YouTube TV gives. This will be great come fall, though, when the new season of NFL Sunday Ticket takes hold.

This is when Apple will finally release its new 2024 iPads
Apple iPad Pro 11 with Apple Magic Keyboard.

It's been a long time since Apple introduced a new iPad — October 2022, to be precise. In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reinforces his belief that Apple will finally reveal new iPads this spring, perhaps as early as the end of this month.

The Apple expert had previously noted that Apple would release new MacBook Airs and iPads at the beginning of the year. The first part of this promise came to fruition earlier this month when Apple revealed the M3 MacBook Air.
