For every piece of new technology that is released, you can be sure that there is someone out there looking for ways to hack it. The iPad is the latest gadget to officially have a “jailbreak”, this one is from SpiritJB.com. Jailbreaking is a process that unlocks iDevices and allows users to run any code they choose, not just Apple authorized software. The iPhone, iTouch, and iPods all have similar software hacks, and now the iPad joins the ranks.
Once you jailbreak an iPad, it will allow you to make your iPad “untethered”, meaning that you can restart your device like any iPad. A tethered device forces you to boot the device via a computer. Once the device is hacked, programs like Flash can be run.
There are downsides to jailbreaking your iPad. Aside from the obvious warranty issues you would face if you tried to get support from Apple, the devices tend to become much buggier and less stable, and the battery life suffers. But if that doesn’t bother you, then you are in luck.
This jailbreak does not unlock the iPad from AT&T, but there are others that can do that for you. Be warned! Jailbreaking has its benefits, but once you hack the device, you are on your own.
