One country tells Apple to put a wall charger in iPhone 12 box

With the iPhone 12, Apple is for the first time shipping its handset without a wall charger and earphones, though it has been kind enough to include a Lightning-to-USB-C charging cable (that you can’t use with the old iPhone wall charger that most people have).

While some people believe Apple made the move in an effort to push customers into forking out for its wireless MagSafe charger or its faster power adapter, the tech giant insisted it removed the extra kit so it could avoid wasting precious materials and energy on building parts that many people already have.

It turns out that Brazil is having none of it, according to 9to5Mac, with São Paulo State’s consumer protection agency telling Apple to include a wall charger with every iPhone 12 or else face a fine.

The agency, Procon-SP, asked Apple in October about why it had chosen not to put the charger in the iPhone 12 box. Besides the previously mentioned reasons, Apple also said the decision would enable it to ship more handsets, allowing it to reduce carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons annually.

But Procon-SP didn’t buy Apple’s explanation, saying in a statement this week that it is “inconsistent to sell the device unaccompanied by the charger,” at the same time asking why the company hasn’t launched a recycling program to collect the old 5W wall chargers shipped with earlier iPhones — but which can’t be used with the Lightning-to-USB-C cable packaged with Apple’s latest handset.

It also wants to know if Apple will offer the same level of tech support to customers who bring in an iPhone 12 that may have been damaged by a third-party wall charger.

Procon-SP said it sees the wall charger as an essential part of the iPhone 12 kit, and that selling the handset without it goes against the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code.

At the current time, it’s only São Paulo State that is telling Apple to provide a wall charger, but reports suggest that Brazil’s National Consumer Secretary is considering making the same demand.

Digital Trends has reached out to Apple for comment on the agency’s decision and we will update this article when we hear back.

Similar shenanigans have been playing out in France. While the European country let Apple off the hook with regards to the wall charger, a law there means Apple has to include a pair of earphones with the iPhone 12.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: Everything we know
Though it will feature improvements across the board, the memory crisis might not spare Samsung’s Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is not the phone that reimagines what a foldable looks like. That job belongs to its sibling, the wider-screen Galaxy Z Fold 8; the Ultra is the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 instead. It carries forward the same tall, narrow design and the same book-style proportions, for the same audience.

If you've used a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold in the past and think that the shape is perfect for you, the Fold 8 Ultra is exactly the right phone for you. It has a sharper inner display, a substantially larger battery, faster charging, and Samsung's new Flex Titanium display structure, which is designed to minimize the crease that has troubled Samsung's foldables for years.

Google’s priciest Pixel 11 may bring a smaller battery and a bigger bill
Google’s next Pro Pixels may turn “less for more” into a flagship feature
Rear shell of Google Pixel 10 Pro.

Google’s next flagship phones may ask buyers to accept two changes that rarely sit well together: smaller batteries and higher starting prices. Reliable leaker Roland Quandt claims the Pixel 11 Pro will carry a 4,850mAh battery, while the larger Pixel 11 Pro XL will offer 5,115mAh. The same leak puts their UK prices at £1,079 and £1,279, respectively, for models with 256GB of storage. Google has yet to confirm any of these figures, with the Pixel 11 launch scheduled for August 12.

Apple’s new Upgrade plan won’t punish missed payments with restrictions, but three strikes could end your lease
Restricted Mode remains in iOS 27 beta, but Apple says it won’t be used for Upgrade payment defaults
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Apple recently announced its new Apple Upgrade leasing plan, which lets customers pay monthly for an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch through Klarna. The program replaces the long-running iPhone Upgrade Program and expands the option beyond phones for the first time.

However, code discovered by 9to5Mac in an iOS 27 beta raised concerns about what could happen if someone fell behind on payments. The new App Managed Features system appeared capable of checking a customer’s payment status and placing a financed device into Restricted Mode.
