Philips Acquires iPod Accessory Developer

Philips Electronics announced today plans to acquire Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO), a popular maker of accessories for devices like the Apple iPod. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed and the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.

DLO, with operations in Charleston, South Carolina and Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, will be folded into the Peripherals & Accessories business unit of Philips’ Consumer Electronics division. This unit, which Philips says has seen increased sales over the last several years, may well benefit from DLO’s niche of developing accessories, including docking stations, FM transmitters, cables and cases for mobile audio-visual devices such as MP3 and video players. DLO alone last year made around $100 million in sales, mainly in the United States.

No announcement was made regarding potential layoffs or what the corporate structure will look like post acquisition.

"Besides building on our acquisition of Power Sentry last year and Gemini in 2004, acquiring Digital Lifestyle Outfitters will strengthen Philips’ ability to address emerging trends in this market – such as peripherals and accessories for multi-functional phones – through innovative products that deliver on Philips’ brand promise of sense and simplicity," said Rudy Provoost, Chief Executive Officer of Philips Consumer Electronics, in a statement.

This strange accessory did something amazing to my iPad
Person working on iPad Pro with Xreal Air 2 connected.

Apple has been trying to sell the idea of using an iPad — the Pro model, specifically — as a legitimate computing machine for a while. It started with putting a Mac-borrowed M-series silicon inside the tablet, followed by bringing Stage Manager to the tablet.

Then came desktop-grade productivity apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Da Vinci Resolve, preceded by Microsoft 365 and Adobe’s editing tools. The ability to plug in an external monitor is also neat for a tablet, but that restricts you to a table.

I found the perfect iPhone 15 accessory, and it’s only $50
Anker Nano 30W Power Bank with USB-C in green with a green iPhone 15.

I’m on my iPhone 15 Pro a lot. Especially during my frequent visits to Disneyland, I rely heavily on my iPhone — or whatever smartphone I happen to have with me that day. Even if it’s not Disneyland, if I know I’m going to be out for most of the day, I always have to have an external battery pack with me.

I’ve gone through a lot of power banks, and one thing that I don’t particularly like about most of them is the fact that you need to provide your own cable. Lately, I’ve leaned more toward MagSafe power banks or ones that have an integrated, built-in cable because, hey, convenience factor!

Everything Apple didn’t announce at its iPhone 15 event
Apple's September 2023 event Tim Cook

Yesterday's iPhone 15 event revolved solely around the iPhone 15/iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, and Apple Watch Series 9 (along with Apple Watch Ultra 2). As a result, no new iPads, Macs, or audio products were announced. This news isn't surprising, and the omissions suggest another Apple event may occur before the year's end, although this has yet to be confirmed and may not happen for a few weeks.

There are a lot of would-be Apple products that could make appearances in the coming weeks or months — but weren't shown at today's event.
