In case you hadn’t heard, Ashton Kutcher has been tapped to play the late Steve Jobs in an upcoming film currently, awkwardly titled Jobs: Get Inspired. The film, which is being directed by the relatively unknown Joshua Michael Stern, will also feature the likewise obscure Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak. It is said to focus on Jobs’ early years as a pioneer in the field of personal computing, and based on everything I just wrote, likely hinges entirely on Kutcher being able to pull off the best acting of his career to date.
Of course, the most crucial bit is that picture of Kutcher in costume as Jobs that you all clicked on this link hoping to see. That image above? That’s the real Jobs. The faux Jobs is decidedly less Jobsian that the genuine article. Look below this text for evidence, but be warned, it’s kinda lame. In effect, the film’s idea of Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs is to put Kutcher in a black turtleneck and call it a day. We can’t decide if that’s brilliant subtlety on the part of the costume design team, or just blatant laziness.
Then again, as TMZ points out, Kutcher does resemble a young Steve Jobs, assuming you can forget that the former has made a worryingly successful career of being America’s least intimidating 34-year-old fratboy stereotype.
The film is still in the very early stages of production so we would expect both a name change and much more news about this thing to emerge before it hits theaters at some point in 2013.
