The Honda Accord is the perfect candidate for aftermarket tuning. It’s a great car that just happens to be a little boring. Thankfully, Honda joined the parade of manufacturers heading to the annual Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, bringing a 401-horsepower Accord concept and a production car with a little pizazz, too.
The Accord is all-new for 2013, so it’s not surprising that Honda wants to show it off at every possible venue, even if it means letting an aftermarket company give it pink lipstick. The Bisimoto Engineering 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Grand Touring won’t be laughing stock, though.
Bisimoto bumped the Accord Coupe’s 3.5-liter V6 from 278 hp to 401, by adding a cat-back exhaust system and a nitrous oxide kit from Nitrous Express (NX). Nitrous (don’t call it “NOS,” that’s the name of another company that sells nitrous kits) helps the engine produce more power by efficiently cramming more oxygen into each cylinder, creating a bigger boom. Unlike the Mitsubishi Eclipse in The Fast & The Furious, this Accord will not explode in a green fireball if its nitrous tank is ruptured.
The Accord’s suspension was also upgraded; it sports new coil springs and sway bars. Hopefully it will be able to cope with the torque steer that results from putting 401 hp in a front-wheel drive chassis.
The Bisimoto Accord also received some visual upgrades to go with its new attitude. It features a Honda Factory Performance (HFP) body kit, Carbon Creations GT Concept 2 rear spoiler, and 19-inch wheels.
The pink accents (they also look red in certain lighting), which encompass the wheels, mirrors, and interior roll cage, may seem unfortunate to some, but they actually look good paired with the matte gray body. It’s an attention-getting combination that doesn’t rely on bright primary colors like most custom cars.
Of course, the Bisimoto is only a concept. However, Honda did have a production car on the SEMA floor. Honda is offering an HFP package on the 2013 Accord Coupe, including the aforementioned body kit, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a sport suspension that lowers the car 0.6 inch. The interior gets HFP floor mats and red lighting.
Compared to the extroverted Bisimoto Accord, the HFP seems like a bit of a letdown. Selling nitrous oxide to Joe and Jane Commuter might be a bit irresponsible for a major car manufacturer, but maybe Honda could take the HFP a little further.
Honda already makes the Civic Si, and it makes sense to give the Accord the same treatment. The bigger Honda is known as a good-driving car, it just needs to be a little less mild-mannered to attract performance enthusiasts. A grown-up Si could be the perfect compromise between the anonymous stock Accord and the wild-but-impractical Bisimoto.
