iOS 26.4 adds ChatGPT to you car’s infotainment screen

Apple's iOS 26.4 brings ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to your car's screen, adds calming ambient music widgets, and previews the in-car video future that drivers have been waiting for.

Apple rolled out iOS 26.4 recently, and while your iPhone got several upgrades, CarPlay quietly had one of its best days in years. The latest iPhone updates bring two meaningful features that can change the way you use CarPlay on your car’s infotainment screen.

Would you use ChatGPT while driving?

Apple’s iOS 26.4 unlocks support for a brand-new category of apps in CarPlay: voice-based conversational apps. AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude will now be able to extend their iPhone apps to CarPlay for hands-free voice conversations, as soon as developers update their apps to support it.

The company has put safety guardrails in place: AI apps must launch directly into voice mode (which is safer than opening the entire app while you’re driving). Further, they can’t display text or imagery, keeping their eyes on the road, where they belong.

And no, you can’t replace Siri as the default assistant just yet, but having a real AI conversation while navigating through the rush-hour traffic is something that’s possible. However, I don’t see many drivers using the feature, as the tasks they might need to perform while driving, such as playing a specific music track or calling someone, are already handled by Siri.

What else is new in CarPlay with iOS 26.4?

The second addition to CarPlay is the Ambient Music widget. For those catching up, Apple released the Ambient Music widget for iPhones with iOS 26.4, and it’s also coming to your car’s dashboard. The widget offers curated playlists on themes such as Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing.

To set up the widget, head to Settings > General > CarPlay > Widgets on your iPhone and add the Ambient Music option. I’ll agree that a Sleep playlist on a CarPlay screen might raise some eyebrows, but I trust drivers to use good judgment.

Another feature that isn’t available yet but coming soon — video in CarPlay — seems nearly ready. Hints about the feature have been found in the iOS 26.4 beta’s code, though Apple hasn’t confirmed the feature yet.

Boring EVs caught a break as Americans lose Polestar
polestar-3-ev

Polestar, the Swedish EV brand controlled by China’s Geely, has been denied authorization under the US Connected Vehicle Rule. As a result, it will not be able to sell vehicles in the US from the 2027 model year onward. The company is not disappearing from American roads overnight. Polestar says it will continue selling existing US inventory of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4, and current owners will still have access to service support. But for future models, the door is effectively closing unless something changes.

The Wild West era of robotaxis is starting to end
New global rules could replace patchwork regulation with stricter safety proof for driverless fleets.
Self driving car from Waymo

Robotaxi rules have entered their first global phase. A UN vehicle standards forum has adopted the first international framework for fully autonomous vehicles, giving driverless fleets a common safety baseline across major markets.

The move lands while robotaxis are expanding from test programs into a bigger commercial race. In the US and China, private fleets more than doubled in 2025 to 8,000 vehicles across more than two dozen major cities.
