Tesla launches car insurance for its customers, promising 30% cheaper rates

Elon Musk’s Tesla is getting into the insurance business: On Wednesday the company launched Tesla Insurance to customers in California.

The company said it would offer rates between 20% and 30% lower than other insurance companies. Tesla said its insurance would offer Tesla drivers “comprehensive coverage and claims management,” adding that it will expand coverage to more states in the future.

“Because Tesla knows its vehicles best, Tesla Insurance is able to leverage the advanced technology, safety, and serviceability of our cars to provide insurance at a lower cost. This pricing reflects the benefits of Tesla’s active safety and advanced driver assistance features that come standard on all new Tesla vehicles,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the new venture.

The company also said that it would expand its insurance plan in the future to offer as a commercial policy for those who use their cars for ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft.

California residents who own or have already ordered a Model S, Model X, Model 3 or Roadster, can go to the Tesla Insurance website to get a free quote. Tesla said that pricing would vary based on the individual, taking into account their driving records

Tesla CEO Elon Musk first hinted at Tesla Insurance back in April, according to CNBC. Musk, who is active on Twitter, hasn’t mentioned anything on the platform about the new insurance offering since it debuted.

In 2016, Tesla began to offer its InsureMyTesla program to Tesla vehicle owners in Australia and Hong Kong by partnering with larger insurance companies. Those prices were estimated to start at $900 a year for an insurance plan.

Tesla’s cars offer a lot to their owners, but their advanced systems typically require specialized repair, driving up the price of insurance for most Tesla drivers. According to ValuePenguin, the annual cost of insuring some Tesla models tops out at around $3,000 per year.

It’s not clear if Tesla might eventually offer their insurance program to owners of other kinds of cars. Digital Trends reached out to Tesla for more information on Tesla Insurance, but we have yet to receive a response.

You can’t just buy the flying and flipping Tesla Roadster in Rocket mode
Hint: It's invite-only.
Tesla Roadster rocket

By now, you've probably seen dozens of videos on social media raving about the new Tesla Roadster, especially its flying and flipping stunt. It's an impressive feat of engineering, and something we've only ever seen in films and sci-fi literature. But the technology is real. Tesla has equipped the car with rocket-inspired thrusters that allow it to go airborne, flip, and land smoothly while surrounded by a cloud of white smoke.

If you think you can just go ahead and buy one, though, there's some disappointing news in store for you. The Rocket trim of the new Roadster, which comes with a full-flight system, is invite-only. And that means only a small pool of enthusiasts (read: very rich people) who manage to snag an invite from the brand will be able to buy it. You can't even reserve it as of now. Tesla's reservation page currently lists the Performance and Thrust models as the two that are open for bookings.

Tesla reveals redesigned Roadster, and it can go airborne using thrusters
The Roadster comes with rocket-inspired thrusters that allow it to fly. Briefly, of course.
Tesla Roadster

Tesla has just revealed its next-gen Roadster, and this one is pretty wild. At the launch event in Texas. the car drove inverted on a ramp, fired up the thrusters, and landed safely. Another stunt had the car speed up and fly over the entire line-up of Tesla electric cars. It's wild to see, and apparently, the thruster-based system that allows it to launch into the air, levitate, and slowly descend to the ground will be available on the production spec car when it goes into production next year.

The new Roadster comes equipped with a multi-mode fan & ground sealing system that pulls air from underneath the vehicle, allowing it to generate enough suction that it can hold the car upside down even when it's not moving. Then we have the side-mounted thrusters, which are powered by cold-gas and feature electric actuators to make adjustments within a fraction of a second, allowing the car to stabilize when it's mid-air.

BYD Da Han EV Official Image

BYD has officially launched the Da Han EV in China, and its headline figures are enough to make even some premium electric cars look a little less impressive. The new flagship sedan promises up to 626 miles (or 1,008 km) of range on China's CLTC testing cycle and can charge its battery from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes, provided it has access to compatible high-power charging infrastructure. Prices start at 235,900 yuan, or approximately $35,200, making it a relatively affordable proposition for a large luxury electric sedan.
