Uber giving NYC customers free rides in Stormtrooper-themed Dodge Chargers

A squad of Stormtroopers is invading New York City today, but you needn’t reach for that blaster or lightsaber just yet.

No, the fleet of Stormtrooper-themed Dodge Chargers zipping around the Big Apple is a part of a promotional alliance between Dodge, Uber, and Mattel in anticipation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opens in exactly 104 days … not that we’re counting or anything.

From 9 AM to 5 PM local time on Friday, Uber customers below 59th Street in Manhattan can unlock one of eight First Order-inspired Charger SRT 392s by using the Uber app and entering the promo code “HOTWHEELSFF.” Not only will your jaunt in the muscle car be flooded with childhood nostalgia, the “Force Friday” rides are completely free for trips under 30 minutes.

If you’re wondering how Mattel fits into all of this, the company has also released a Hot Wheels version of the car you see above, which is but one element in a galaxy-sized merchandise campaign to honor the new films. Each rider lucky enough to snag one of the modified Chargers will take home one of the diecast models as a souvenir, as well as a cool story to make your nerd friends jealous.

The Force Awakens opens on December 18th, and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac, as well as series veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hammill, and Carrie Fisher. If you miss your chance at an intergalactic Uber ride, not to worry — Disney is hard at work planning various Star Wars attractions at Disneyland and Disney World. We’re not sure what exactly the parks will contain yet, but they will measure in at 14 acres each, and are probably the closest thing you’ll get to visiting a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | Film Clip

Everyone's talking about The Mandalorian these days, so it's easy to forget that a new Star Wars movie will be in theaters in just under a month. Disney has provided a nice reminder of that fact, though, in the form of a new clip from Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

Recording rides won’t fix Uber’s assault problem, lawyers say, but it’s a start
An Uber App on a smartphone.

Thorough background checks, kicking accused predators off the apps, reporting assaults to police, and working more closely with authorities. These might be reasonable ways for ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft to deal with the tsunami of complaints the companies face from riders who say their drivers have sexually assaulted them. Or, more easily, you could just record your ride on your phone.

Indeed, Uber on Wednesday announced it would be rolling out a new feature on the app: The ability to make audio recordings of rides and send the audio to the company in the case of severe misconduct.

Stormtroopers invade Fortnite, and you can get the character skin for free
star wars stormtroopers added fortnite

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came out on Friday for consoles and PC and The Mandalorian is currently streaming on Disney+, but you don't need either of them to get some new Star Wars content today. Fortnite introduced Imperial Army Stormtroopers into the battle royale mode, and you can grab the character skin for a limited time.

Available until November 17 at 7 p.m. ET, the Imperial Stormtrooper Outfit makes you look just like the classic grunts from the Star Wars films and games. The classic "Wilhelm Scream" might be missing, but you'll still feel like an intimidating Stormtrooper who is probably going to be killed by a Jedi or member of the Rebels after missing all of your blaster shots.
