AMD just gave your GPU a 92% performance boost — for free

AMD gave us another reason to choose Team Red over Nvidia’s Team Green with a powerful driver update earlier today. The Adrenaline 22.7.1 driver update gives AMD Radeon GPUs a whopping 92% performance boost, along with some quality-of-life improvements.

The news was dropped without warning by AMD in a release note on their website. AMD said in its release notes the update brings increased performance in refresh rates for several GPU lines, including the 6900 series, 5700 series, and Vega series.

The driver update also brought some improvements to other areas of GPU performance. A new Noise Suppression update cancels background noise during video calls and recordings. Work from home parents can meet with their teams while their kids bounce around next to them, and the GPU will automatically focus on the speaker while muting the chaos. This works a lot like Nvidia’s RTX Voice software, which has been around since 2020.

However, it’s important to note that Noise Suppression only works on computers with an AMD Ryzen 5000 and above processor. It seems the feature draws heavily on the processor, although we have yet to confirm the actual process involved.

The update brings improvements to OpenGL for Radeon graphics. AMD’s own testing showed a 92% increase in FPS on 4K with Minecraft with the Ryzen 7 and RX 6800T processors, and up to 89% faster on RX 6950 XT processors.

Another quality-of-life improvement included with the driver update is Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) can now be used by laptops using Ryzen hybrid graphics systems. RSR improves game performance by up to 70% by harnessing deep core abilities. It’s been available on later Radeon GPUs for desktops since January, so this update means AMD is taking gaming laptops seriously.

Finally, the Adrenaline 22.7.1 update brings Radeon Boost to a few games with intense graphics, including Elden Ring, Resident Evil Village, and Valorant. Radeon Boost gently lowers the resolution during fast-action scenes to maintain a higher FPS, thus reducing lag and keeping the graphics looking crisp.

Following a rocky road to AMD's RX 9000 series GPU launch, rumors circulating on the Chiphell forums suggest that AMD is planning to release a Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card variant equipped with 32GB of GDDR6 memory. If true, this would make it one of the most VRAM-heavy GPUs in AMD’s next-generation lineup, catering to both gamers and AI enthusiasts who require large memory capacities. Reports indicate that this variant could launch by the second quarter of 2025, although AMD has yet to confirm any official details.

The standard RX 9070 XT is expected to feature 16GB of GDDR6 memory, which aligns with previous AMD GPUs in the high-end gaming segment. We finally have good news about AMD’s RX 9070 XT

AMD announced its next graphics card, the RX 9070 XT, last month, but details about the GPU have been sparse. We might finally have some good news to share, though. According to VideoCardz, AMD is set to hold a press conference later this month that will detail the RDNA 4 architecture and the performance we can expect out of AMD's next GPU.

Although we've long known that AMD would concede the flagship battle to Nvidia in the face of the RTX 5090, Team Red was particularly light on details when it announced the RX 9070 XT. The company didn't so much as share specs for the new card, instead leaving it to board partners to fill in the missing details. Then, the card was reportedly delayed. AMD originally told us it would launch in a matter of "weeks," only to backtrack and point toward a March release later.
