Don’t wait for new GPUs. It’s safe to buy a gaming laptop now
Upcoming Nvidia RTX 40-series laptops over a black and green background.

If you've been planning to buy a gaming laptop, it seems that it might be best to shop now instead of waiting for new hardware. Although rumor has it that Nvidia might soon launch three new desktop GPUs, it appears that those graphics cards are unlikely to appear in laptops anytime soon. Is there any point in waiting for the RTX 40-series refresh if you're a laptop user? For various reasons, most likely not.

Various leakers have been sharing information about the rumored RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4080 Super for a while now. Considering that Nvidia is planning to deliver a "special address" at CES 2024, the general assumption is that this is when the company will officially announce the RTX 40-series refresh.

SteelSeries’ new mic is better than my $700 setup
Steelseries Alias and Alias Pro sitting on a table.

I thought I had my audio figured out. Before I started reviewing graphics cards and gaming monitors, I worked at a recording studio, and got my foot into the world of reviewing with pro audio equipment. I've touched microphones that you could find in a bargain bin for $50, and microphones that cost more than a car. SteelSeries' new Alias and Alias Pro are something different.

They don't sound better than those microphones that cost thousands of dollars -- not even close -- but they're far and above what I've seen out of USB microphones. After using them for a bit, it's clear they're even better than my current audio setup, which is comprised of a Shure SM7B (the gold standard for broadcast microphones) and a GoXLR Mini.

Acer’s new gaming laptop bring Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs under $1,000
Two Acer gaming laptops over a dark blue background.

You can find Nvidia's RTX 40-series graphics cards in some of the best gaming laptops, but the downside is that they're all expensive, if not overpriced. Previously, that meant you'd be forced to choose between getting something affordable or getting access to Nvidia's GPU cheat code -- DLSS 3. Now, there's finally some hope on the horizon, as Acer is launching a budget-friendly laptop that can still run modern games. We're talking about the Acer Nitro V 15.

The new laptop will be available in a few different configurations, each equipped with Intel's latest 13th-Gen CPUs, including either Core i5 or Core i7 models. All of them also come with a 15.6-inch 144Hz display. While every configuration also features a Nvidia graphics card, not all of those GPUs are equally thrilling. The cheapest model, priced at $700, features a Core i5-13420H CPU and an RTX 2050 GPU. This comes paired with just 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.
