SXSW 2014: IBM’s Watson stars in the kitchen as well as TV’s Jeopardy

A couple of years back, IBM’s supercomputer, dubbed Watson, dazzled audiences and tore through Jeopardy rounds with ease, dispatching the game show’s uber-champions including Ken Jennings, who was a Jeopardy Champion an unthinkable 74 times.

At SXSW 2014 though, Watson is showcasing its seemingly limitless potential by conquering an entirely different topic: cooking. At this point, Watson knows roughly 35,000 recipes, but perhaps even more impressive is its ability to employ chemistry to take a set of ingredients and sort them out, including details like amount, and conjure something up that humans would enjoy.

Attendees of the annual show, which kicked off on March 7 and will close its doors on March 16, have been able to taste recipes thought up by Watson, which are then put together by Carly DeFilippo and her colleagues from the Institute of Culinary Education. Chefs from ICE then take the recipes, cook ’em up, and then serve them via a food truck outside of the show. IBM calls it Cognitive Cooking, and hopes that with this experiment, it can help people to think about the potential nontraditional applications that computers like Watson could have.

I finally found a gaming laptop utility that’s actually worth using
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 sitting on a coffee table.

Nearly all gaming laptops come with bundled first-party software, and most of it isn't all that good. They tend to be poorly designed and riddled with bloatware and features that you'll never need. Armoury Crate is Asus' version of that, and while it isn't terrible, it suffers from many of those same problems.

A large number of users on Reddit have voiced their criticism of Armoury Crate, accusing it of being buggy, broken, and overly complex. Some of the most common issues include the software's cluttered user interface, promotional pop-ups, unnecessary bloatware, and the high usage of system resources. In my experience, I do find Armoury Crate's UI to be confusing, and I've also noticed that the software runs way too many background processes and services, some of which seem unnecessary.
