MSI’s new RTX 4090 might finally convince me to buy one

In case you were hoping to see even more of Nvidia’s top graphics cards on the shelves, MSI has got your back. The company just unveiled around 20 new GPU models, and it’s not just more of the same — these new cards belong to MSI’s Gaming Slim series, meaning they’ll take up significantly less room in your PC case. And yes, this also applies to the behemoth RTX 4090.

MSI is readying up Gaming Slim models powered by the RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070 Ti, and RTX 4070 GPUs. There are already RTX 4060 Ti 16GB cards in the Slim lineup, and the RTX 4060 hardly needs such a refresh. All cards will be available in either black or white, adding up to an impressive number of new products.

MSI’s Gaming Slim series focuses on providing adequate cooling while cutting down on size. While the midrange Ada cards are already dual-slot, the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 hog a lot of space, being triple- and quad-slot cards, respectively. Some models of the RTX 4090 go up to 4.5 slots, although there are also options that fit in just over three slots. Then there’s Asus with its 3.1-slot RTX 4060. At this rate, a 4-slot card will be the norm a few years from now.

Given that unconstrained growth, it’s nice to see that even the RTX 4090 can be altered to a more reasonable size, although we don’t know how much thinner it will be exactly. The RTX 4070 Ti Gaming Slim will take up 2.5 slots, while the RTX 4070 remains a 2-slot option. All the cards now receive a triple-fan cooling solution with MSI’s Torx Fan 5.0, up to eight heat pipes, and a copper baseplate. The cooling on the high-end models might still be improved in some way, but MSI hasn’t shared much in the way of details yet.

Dropping down to a Slim card means sacrificing some clock speeds, but the loss should not be major enough to matter even in the fastest GPUs in the lineup. Be prepared to pay a premium for one of these GPUs, though. Cards made by Nvidia’s partners typically cost more than the recommended list price, and we can only hope the bump will be reasonable enough. The black version of the MSI Gaming RTX 4070 Gaming X Slim is already available on Newegg, and it’s not too bad — it costs $660 . On the other hand, there’s also a $1,600 RTX 4070 Ti Gaming Slim, but that price is bound to change.

It seems that the RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4070 will be the first to launch, seeing as MSI has already posted the full specs for each card. Perhaps we’ll have to wait for the high-end options to make it to market, but we now know that they’re on the imminent horizon.

The RTX 5080 might prove its worth on upcoming gaming laptops
RTX 50 laptop prices.

With only a month to go before Nvidia’s new RTX 50-series equipped laptops go on sale, recent leaks have provided an early look at the performance of the RTX 5080 laptop GPU. According to a 3DMark Time Spy listing on Bilibili, the GPU seemingly offers a notable uplift in synthetic benchmarks compared to its predecessor, the RTX 4080.

The RTX 5080 scored 21,948 points in the 3DMark Time Spy graphics test, surpassing the RTX 4080’s average score of 17,601 points (as pointed out by Notebookcheck)—a 24% performance increase. Considering that the desktop variant of the RTX 5080 is about 10-15% more powerful than the desktop RTX 4080, the laptop variant seems to offer a considerably better uplift. At least, from what the early benchmark suggests. It also puts the RTX 5080 laptop in the same league as the RTX 4090 laptop.

The RTX 5060 Ti might fall into a familiar VRAM trap

It seems that Nvidia is set to follow a similar approach to the RTX 4060 Ti launch by offering the upcoming RTX 5060 Ti in two configurations: 8GB and 16GB models. This information comes from a recent listing on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) website, spotted by @Olrak29_  (X formerly Twitter) which additionally confirms that the standard RTX 5060 will launch in a single configuration featuring 8GB of VRAM.

Nvidia is yet to confirm the existence of the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti, but it is expected that there are plans to unveil the GPUs in March. This information also falls in line with a report from last month which pointed out similar memory configurations and the inclusion of the PG152 printed circuit board (PCB) with the GB206 GPU die.

Nvidia says the RTX 5070 is as fast as the RTX 4090 — let’s look at the specs
The RTX 5070 in a graphic.

Nvidia made some stark claims with the announcement of its RTX 50-series GPUs. It promised double the performance with the best graphics card Nvidia has ever released, the RTX 5090, and it said outright that the more modest RTX 5070 could equal the performance of the last-generation king, the RTX 4090. That seems dubious, even with the hype surrounding the new hardware.

We can't officially confirm or deny such claims until the embargo lifts on reviews for these new cards, but for now, let's consider how the RTX 5070 lines up with the 4090, to give us an idea about what to expect.
Pricing and availability
The Nvidia RTX 4090 debuted in October 2022 with an at-the-time eye-watering price tag of $1,600. It's remained at around that level ever since, with some shortages spiking the price over $2,000 at times, depending on the version. As of late January 2025, however, the card is sold out almost everywhere, with only overpriced versions around $2,500 still available new, and second-hand versions selling for around $1,600.
