XM Recalls Portable Satellite Batteries

It looks as if XM Satellite Radio, in conjunction with some of its hardware partners, is issuing a voluntary recall of sorts with older XM2go portable satellite radio devices. The impacted units are the Delphi MyFi, Pioneer AirWare and Tao XM2Go which have a rechargeable battery which has a black label and white lettering.

According to a website linked off of XM’s front page, it looks as if subscribers should be receiving a new white label with dark lettering rechargeable battery in the mail along with a letter explaining the voluntary recall being done in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The batteries being recalled reportedly have the potential to overheat and possibly melt or present a burn hazard.

Consumers are encouraged to recycle the old batteries at a suitable recycling center or collection point. Those with more questions about the recall can call (800)261-7628 or visit an information website.

SpaceX wants to send another 30,000 Starlink internet satellites into space

SpaceX already has permission to deploy 12,000 internet satellites in low-Earth orbit, and launched the first batch of 60 in May 2019. Now it’s seeking the go-ahead to launch an additional 30,000.

The effort is part of SpaceX's ambitious $10 billion Starlink project to create a system capable of beaming cheap broadband to locations around the world where internet connectivity is currently unreliable, too pricey, or non-existent. A growing number of companies — Amazon and Facebook among them — are also working on similar projects.

NASA’s satellite projects will study the sun using solar sailing
nasa small satellite projects cme 1

NASA has selected two proposals to demonstrate technologies to improve science observations in deep space. The proposals could help NASA develop better models to predict space weather events that can affect astronauts and spacecraft, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In this image, taken by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory on Feb. 27, 2000, a CME is seen erupting from the Sun, which is hidden by the disk in the middle, so the fainter material around it can be seen. Small satellites can be used for anything from collecting images and videos of Earth to exploring the Solar System, and as the technology improves, more and more uses will become possible. NASA has been searching for ideas to push ahead the capabilities of the hardware, and the agency has just announced two new projects to demonstrate the potential of small satellites.
