Reel News: Joker, Gemini Man, and Zombieland: Double Tap

This week we take a look at Joker, Gemini Man, Zombieland: Double Tap, and review some exciting Spider-Man news.

We first look at the hotly anticipated film Joker from director Todd Phillips. A look into the origin of Batman’s long-time nemesis, it stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title roll of comedian Arthur Fleck, who lives at home with his mother and has a day job as a clown for hire. Phoenix is getting rave reviews for his Joker take, but Winn warns that the R rating is not to be taken lightly. “It’s definitely not for the kids,” he notes. Also be aware that there is some controversy surrounding this release, and some theaters are banning cosplayers. However, says Winn, “if you’re going to see one movie this weekend, it has to be Joker.” Joker opens October 4 in theaters nationwide. Buy tickets here.

Next up is Gemini Man, the new film from director Ang Lee starring Will Smith … and Will Smith. Smith plays both a 50-year-old version of himself, as well as a cloned, 23-year-old version of himself. “It’s technology we’ve never seen,” from Weta Digital Studios, notes Keeney. “We’ve seen de-aging before, but this process is a complete digital creation,” and it looks to be an astonishing visual accomplishment. We then dive into the recently revealed news that Spider-Man will, indeed, stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney and Sony has announced they will collaborate on a third feature film, slated for a summer 2021 release.

Finally, we take a look at Zombieland: Double Tap, the long-awaited sequel to the post-apocalyptic action-comedy Zombieland. Most sequels fall off in quality, but we’ve got reason to believe Double Tap will blow us away. You can catch Zombieland: Double Tap in theaters October 18.

Welcome to Reel News, where Erin Keeney and Riley Winn break down the upcoming box office releases, and what’s going to be worth your money at theaters. This week we take a look at Jumanji: The Next Level, Uncut Gems, and Bombshell.

First up we have Jumanji: The Next Level, starring Dwayne (“The Rock”) Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and more. Keeney notes, “The ensemble is so fun to watch,” with great additions like Awkwafina, Danny Glover, and Danny DeVito. “The last Jumanji (in 2017) made $1 billion worldwide,” Winn says, “The last movie was so funny and so entertaining, and the fact that they were able to bring everyone back for another movie is pretty awesome.” Jumanji: The Next Level opens in theaters nationwide on December 13.

Welcome to Reel News, our weekly segment looking at what’s coming out in the box office, and what’s worth your money this weekend. Join Erin Keeney and Riley Winn as they take a look at A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Knives Out, and Queen & Slim.

First off is the much-anticipated A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks as the iconic children’s television host Fred Rogers. The story revolves around a journalist (Matthew Rhys of The Americans) sent to write a puff piece on Rogers that quickly becomes a bigger story. Winn notes that, despite what some people may expect, “it’s not a biopic. The movie is light on Rogers’ backstory, which was already the subject of last year’s documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?" Keeney notes, “Instead of retelling the beloved host’s life, it’s a drama framed and shot to feel like a grown-up episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” The casting, the cinematography, and the story “is a testimony to Rogers’ enduring influence,” says Keeney. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood opens November 22.
