The Amazon Echo Buds are on sale right now for just $90, down a massive $40 from the usual $130. There’s no telling how long the offer will last though so those wanting to take home Digital Trends’ choice for the best true wireless earbuds on the cheap will need to act fast or risk disappointment.
Released in October, the Echo Buds were designed to rival the likes of the Apple AirPods and Samsung Galaxy Buds. Their claim to fame? Top-of-the-line features, including noise-reduction and sweat-resistance, at a price that won’t break the bank — and that’s when they aren’t in the discount bin.
They don’t sound bad, either, with our resident audio buff Simon Cohen noting: “I wasn’t expecting the Echo Buds to deliver excellent audio quality, but they do, easily beating Apple’s AirPods. Sound is rich and full, and very satisfying.” This earned them an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars in our review.
“One of the highlights of the Echo Buds is their onboard Active Noise Reduction (ANR) developed by Bose,” Cohen said. “I’m still not clear on the difference between Active Noise Reduction (ANR) and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), but I can tell you this: It works really well.”
Obviously, safety is the main concern when using noise-canceling, or noise-reduction in the Echo Buds case. For example, you need to be able to hear the vehicles around you while crossing a busy street. Fortunately, Amazon has made it extremely easy to control the feature in no more than a second.
“With a simple double-tap on either bud, passthrough mode can be enabled to allow ambient sound to seep through,” we wrote in our announcement coverage on October 29. “Double-tap it again and the noise reduction feature will fire back up, blocking it out once again.”
The Echo Buds also come with Amazon Alexa built-in, as well as some exclusive Alexa Skills. These turn them into everything from a digital assistant to a Whole Foods sales associate, who can find out if the store has an item in stock and which aisle it’s stored in. No human interaction needed.
If you aren’t a fan of Alexa, they can be programmed to work with a different voice assistant like Google Assistant and Siri. However, choose to take this route and you’ll lose the ability to wake up your assistant of choice using your voice — that privilege is reserved exclusively for Amazon’s offering.
Just like the Apple AirPods, the Echo Buds have a five-hour talk time with the bundled charging case containing enough juice for around another 20 hours of use. Choose to disable noise-reduction and the always-listening microphones, and this figure could climb up by half an hour or more.
Clump this all together and it’s no surprise we named the Amazon Echo Buds the best true wireless earbuds on the shelves. There are no other earbuds out there that deliver a similar experience at a comparable price. The AirPods Pro have near enough the same skill set but retail for $250.
“At $130, the Amazon Echo Buds are a great value,” Cohen said. “It’s their sheer number of useful features, like hands-free Alexa access and awesome noise-reduction, that make them a great purchase, he added before noting they hit the sweet spot of price, quality, and features.
Don’t just take our word for it, though. Here’s what one customer had to say:
I bought my wife a set of AirPods Pro for her birthday, and on a whim bought these for myself. I was blown away at the better bass response, sound quality, and noise-reduction of these buds. Even if they were at the same price point as the Apple buds, I’d be impressed.
If you’re after something a bit different, there are several other incredible headphone deals available now, including the Apple AirPods with Charging Case for $129, Apple AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case for $169, Beats Solo 3 Wireless for $189, and Bose QuietComfort 35 for $230.
