Apple AirPods

It’s no accident that Apple’s AirPods are by far the most popular true wireless earbuds on the planet. They’re small and convenient, they pair with iPhones in seconds, and they’ve got excellent wireless and call quality. If you’ve been wanting a pair, now’s probably the best time of the year to pick them up. We’ve never seen a lower price on AirPods with a charging case than Amazon’s Black Friday deal of $129 — a $31 savings on the regular price. It’s one of many great Black Friday AirPods deals we’ve found.

With five hours of playtime per charge and 24 hours total when you include the charging case, that’s easily enough for a full day. Naturally, iPhone users will benefit the most from the AirPods as they give you super-quick pairing to your phone and hands-free access to Siri thanks to the new Apple H1 wireless chip.

If you love the idea of the AirPods, but want some added convenience, the AirPods with wireless charging case are also a great deal right now on Amazon, at just $155 — $44 off the regular price of $199. They’ve got all of the benefits of the standard AirPods, plus a charging case that can recharge using any Qi charging mat or the included lightning cable — the choice is yours.

As good as the AirPods are, you will be blown away by the AirPods Pro — we certainly were. With improvements across the board, from sound quality to water-resistance and even an active noise-canceling (ANC) feature that is as good as what you’ll get from the superb Sony WF-1000XM3, the AirPods Pro are one of the best true wireless earbuds available. Normally $50 more than the AirPods with wireless charging case, they’re already a great value, but during Black Friday they’re just $235 at Amazon.

If you’re not convinced that the AirPods Pro are right for you, we’ve created several comparisons between them and their current top competitors. See how they compare to: The Sony WF-1000XM3, Jabra’s Elite 75t, and Amazon’s new Echo Buds.

Or let us save you some time: In every comparison, we come to the same conclusion: If you use an iPhone, the AirPods Pro are the buds to get. You may save some money with other earbuds, but you won’t find the same number of convenient features, comfort, and sound quality.

Of course, there are tons of other headphones deals to be had this Black Friday, so shop around. Also, don’t forget that Cyber Monday will have it’s own great headphone deals too.

Second-generation AirPods Pro have USB-C now, too
Apple AirPods Pro with USB-C.

In one of the least-kept surprises of today's iPhone 15 event, Apple announced that the second-generation AirPods Pro are switching to USB-C for their charging case.

That's a big deal because they'll now use the same charger as the iPad and MacBook — and also because they can use any other USB-C cable that you've got laying around. And because we're not talking about a device with a huge battery capacity, you don't need to worry so much about whether you have the right USB-C cable. Things should charge just fine, and fast enough, given that the battery case only sports a 523 mAh battery.

Are Apple AirPods waterproof? Everything you need to know
AirPods 3 on an athlete.

So, you just bought yourself a nice new pair of AirPods, or you're thinking about it because they're among the best wireless earbuds you can buy, and you're wondering if they're waterproof. The answer is no, AirPods are not waterproof and you should not wear them while swimming or in the shower or during a water balloon fight. But, if the pair of AirPods you've got (or got your eye on) is either the third-generation AirPods or the first or second-generation AirPods Pro, then you're in luck as they are water resistant.

We're going to get into what all that means and break down how water resistant each AirPods model is and what their water-resistance ratings mean for your daily activities. Let's go.
Water resistant vs. waterproof
As we mentioned above, none of Apple's AirPods -- AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPod Max -- are waterproof. But what is "waterproof" anyway? From an electronic device standpoint, being waterproof means that the device is watertight and can be completely submerged in water. There's a common ratings system designed for electronics to measure this (as well as dust and dirt resistance) known as the IP (Ingress Protection) rating, which we cover in our post on the water-resistance rating system.

A new USB-C case may be in AirPods Pro’s future
The Lightning connection on the AirPods Pro case.

The Lightning connection on AirPods Pro may be a thing of the past if Apple finally makes the switch to USB-C. Phil Nickinson/Digital Trends

One of the worst-kept secrets in Cupertino, California (if anyone's actually trying to keep it, anyway) is that the iPhone 15 is going to switch to USB-C from Apple's proprietary Lightning connection when it's announced later this year. That's likely due in no small part due to the European Union, and generally speaking, it's a good thing because proprietary cables are bad for you, even if they're great for Apple. (And arguably better for the product.)
