Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 5 have never been cheaper

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

There has never been a better time to buy an Apple Watch — be it an Apple Watch Series 3 or Apple Watch Series 5. Why? Because both are down to their lowest-ever prices for Memorial Day. The former is on sale from $179 at Amazon and Best Buy, and the latter from $299. We aren’t kidding.

For most it’s the Apple Watch Series 5 that will be the attracting force, and rightfully so. It’s the latest smartwatch in Apple’s arsenal and it’s on sale for $100 under sticker, the cheapest we’ve seen it by $50 (the previous lowest-recorded price was $350). $299 for a current Apple Watch is unprecedented.

Of course, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a fantastic alternative. It’s armed with nearly the same skillset as the Apple Watch Series 5. Both monitor heart health, record steps, and have all the same core functions of a smartwatch — notification mirroring and so on.

The main differences? The Apple Watch Series 5 has a larger screen that can be set to stay on at all times, an electrical heart sensor that can take ECGs, and automatic fall detection. It also has a compass built in, comes with a newer, faster processor, and lasts for a fair bit longer on a single charge.

The fact of the matter is you can’t go wrong with either of these smartwatches. They’re both absolute bargains at they’re respective price points. Although if you’re torn between the two, we’d have to side with the Apple Watch Series 5. It’s the latest model and, frankly, $100 off is bonkers.

Not a fan of the Apple Watch? There are plenty of other Memorial Day sales happening right now that see everything from the Garmin Fenix 6S Pro to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in the bargain bin. Our recommendation? REI has the Garmin Forerunner 45S for $150, down $50 from the usual $200.

The Apple Watch badly needs the iPhone 16e treatment

Apple isn’t very quick to update its lower cost products, but there’s one model which badly needs its attention: the Apple Watch SE. The company’s willingness to let the SE languish for several years is now affecting its bottom line, and when the Apple Watch Series 11 arrives later this year, an Apple Watch SE 3 needs to be there alongside it.
Hitting where it hurts

In 2024 shipments of Apple Watch models declined by 19% compared to 2023, according to Counterpoint Research, and a quote in the report stated, “The slowdown of the existing Apple Watch SE lineup and the lack of new SE models contributed to the decline.” While the entire smartwatch industry slowed over the same period, Apple saw the largest fall in shipments, which points to something being awry with its current product range.

Pixel Watch 3 gets key health feature Apple Watch doesn’t have

Last summer, Google announced the Pixel Watch 3, highlighting its “loss-of-pulse” feature. Regulators have now approved this feature, and according to the company, it will be available to users in the U.S. in March.

“Loss-of-pulse” is a groundbreaking feature that can detect when a user’s heart stops beating. If this occurs, the watch will automatically call emergency services for potentially life-saving care if the user does not respond to a prompt. This feature is ideally suited for those suffering from cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose, or poisoning.

Why the OnePlus Watch 3 is missing a key Apple Watch feature in the US and Canada

The OnePlus Watch 3 has officially launched and has several new features, including an ECG (electrocardiogram) analyzer, which was unavailable in the second-generation model.

However, as OnePlus told 9to5Google, this feature will not be accessible to users in the U.S. and Canada because the watch has not received official certification for its ECG capabilities from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite this limitation, all users, regardless of location, will have access to the new “60-Second Health Check-In” feature expected to be released in the year’s second quarter.
