The Panasonic Lumix GH5 and Lumix G9 are two of our favorite Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, and now both are significantly discounted through Cyber Monday. The GH5, one of the best video cameras you can buy thanks to its professional-level 4K video features, is selling for $1,298 at most retailers, a savings of $700. , including the V-Log L upgrade and two extra batteries, for the same price. The Lumix G9, which focuses more on still photography than video, is available for $998, $500 off, and Adorama is offering that includes a case, memory card, extra battery, and more. These deals are set to expire on November 30.
Why you should buy the Lumix GH5
The GH5 is a powerful hybrid camera that has earned acclaim for its strong video features. It can shoot both Ultra HD 3,840 x 2,160 and DCI 4,096 x 2,160 resolutions at up to 60 frames per second. Unlike many hybrid still and video cameras, the GH5 puts no limit on the length of video clips you can record, making it perfect for vlogging or shooting interviews when you need to shoot very long takes. Also unique, it can record high-quality files straight to the SD card, with 10-bit 4:2:2 color and bitrates up to 400 megabits per second. Combined with the V-Log L upgrade as part of the Adorama bundle, this provides more detail, dynamic range, and color than other mirrorless cameras and makes the footage easier to work with in post.
That’s not to say the GH5 isn’t also a capable still camera. It shoots 20-megapixel photos at up to 12 frames per second with snappy and accurate autofocus. The body is built well and weather-sealed, letting you continue shooting in dusty, rainy, or cold environments. Its smaller Four Thirds sensor won’t grant the same resolution or low light performance as a full-frame camera, but it does mean all of the lenses can be considerably more compact, making the GH5 a great camera for travel.
Why you should buy the Lumix G9
The G9 took a lot of the features of the GH5 and repackaged them into a new design focused on the still photographer. The control layout is nearly perfect and Panasonic seems to have borrowed the best bits of other brands and combined them in the G9’s design. Aside from the much more expensive Olympus OM-D E-M1X, the G9 is as professional as Micro Four Thirds cameras get. It’s a steal for under $1,000.
While the G9 is geared more for still photography, it still incorporates many of the same video features of the GH5, including 4K/60p recording. Since its launch, the camera has grown more capable thanks to firmware updates, the most recent of which brought 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording. Like the GH5, the G9 is also weather-sealed.
Both the G9 and GH5 are great choices for enthusiast and aspiring professional photographers. See our roundup of Cyber Monday camera deals for savings on more great products.
