Amazon Prime Day is the retailer’s biggest sales event of the year. Each year, the retail giant cuts the prices on hundreds of thousands of products as part of its Prime Day sales. It’s arguably the best online sales event out there, so we thought we’d teach you everything you need to know about what Amazon Prime Day is and why it’s so important.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
As we mentioned, Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest shopping event of the year. The company started it back in 2015 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Since then, Prime Day sales have gotten bigger and better every time. In 2020, its Prime Day sales were up 45.2% on the previous year despite being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the name, Prime Day actually runs for two days with hundreds of thousands of different deals available to customers. It typically happens in July of each year, but in 2020, it was delayed until October due to the global pandemic.
What do I need to do to participate in Prime Day?
Prime Day deals are exclusively available for Amazon Prime members only. That means you’ll need an Amazon Prime membership to take advantage of the great deals going on. Fortunately, a 30-day trial of Prime is good enough for you to be able to partake in the offers but there are plenty of great other reasons to remain an Amazon Prime member throughout the year.
What items are on sale on Prime Day?
Honestly, everything. Typically, there are big savings on everything from laptops, TVs, kitchen appliances, home and office equipment, right down to fashion, books, DVDs and Blu-rays, as well as gaming items. There’s not really anything that isn’t on sale at some point during Prime Day. Whether you need a fitness wearable or the latest iPad, there’s usually a discount during Prime Day.
One thing to bear in mind is that Amazon loves to heavily discount its own products during this time. That means it’s usually very likely that you’ll see big price cuts on Amazon Kindles, Amazon Alexa smart speakers, along with other products owned by Amazon such as Ring smart video doorbells. Sometimes, there are discounts on Amazon gift cards too, which can be useful for giving as presents.
When is Prime Day 2021?
We don’t yet have an official date for Prime Day 2021. That’s because Amazon generally doesn’t announce the event until around two weeks before it’s due to happen. Typically though, Prime Day tends to be held in the first or second week of July. The only exception here is 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s expected that in 2021, Prime Day will return to its usual slot in July though giving you the ideal opportunity to buy great products for the summer.
What happened on Prime Day 2020?
Prime Day 2020 was delayed until October 13-14 due to the ongoing pandemic. That meant it was the perfect time for many customers to start their holiday shopping, even beating Black Friday to the punch for awesome sales and discounts.
Due to so many people being under stay-at-home measures, and Amazon offering some great discounts, Prime Day 2020 was a huge success. It sold an extra $3.24 billion worth of products compared to previous years which was probably further helped by the fact that people could begin shopping for the holidays.
According to Amazon, some of its biggest selling products were Amazon’s own devices. These included the Alexa-enabled Echo Dot and Amazon Fire Stick 4K. Other big sellers included the iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum, LifeStraw Personal Water Filter, Lego Star Wars Stormtrooper Helmet, Bose QuietComfort 35 II wireless headphones, and Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch.
What will be on sale on Prime Day 2021?
There’s no guarantee of what will be on sale during Prime Day 2021 but we can guess what’s likely to be discounted based on past Prime Days. Amazon prefers to discount products that are popular during the given year. It’s likely that we’ll see products such as the latest Samsung smartphones on offer, along with potentially the Apple iPhone and other Apple products such as the latest Apple MacBook Air.
Amazon is also always keen to provide great deals on its own products. With rumors of new Amazon Kindles coming soon, this would be the ideal time to provide them with a price cut to entice new and existing customers into the e-reader world. It’s also likely we’ll see discounts on Amazon Echos as well as Ring Smart Video Doorbells to attract new customers keen on embracing the smart home lifestyle.
Home and kitchen products such as the Ninja Foodi and Instant Pot range are also highly likely to be discounted as they always prove popular during sales season. If you’re keen to make your home cooking a little easier and more delicious, this will be the ideal time to look out for great Prime Day deals.
For those looking for a new laptop or Chromebook, great discounts are often available with big names such as the Microsoft Surface Pro, Apple MacBook Air, and many different Chromebooks likely to see big price cuts.
For the audio-visual lover, expect to see deals and sales on the biggest names in headphones such as the Sony WH-1000XM4 and also big price cuts on great 4K TVs too.
As Prime Day 2021 is likely to return to its usual summer slot, you may also see price cuts on outdoor equipment such as garden furniture, grilling equipment, and other items that your family can use outdoors.
Do other retailers take part in Prime Day?
Not officially, no. As Amazon.com is the only Amazon store, it’s the only official place to take part in Prime Day. However, other major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy often use the two-day event to also provide great deals for customers. In 2020, Walmart’s Big Save Event actually lasted a day longer than Prime Day meaning you could enjoy discounts for a little longer than usual.
Generally, retailers like to remain competitive even while one company has a big sale on, so don’t be surprised if you see other great deals going on at the same time. It’s a smart move to shop around before assuming that Amazon has the best price out there.
Is Prime Day better for deals than Black Friday?
Yes and no. When it comes to Amazon products, you can’t really beat Prime Day for the biggest discounts. However, as Black Friday doesn’t apply to any one store, it can be a better sales season as retailers are all keen to provide the best sales and deals.
Both sales seasons are worth checking out and much of when to buy comes down to when you actually need the product. It might be worth waiting till November to save a few bucks but if you need the product in the summer, Prime Day should still be worth checking out.
Some sources also believe that Amazon Prime Day is better for smaller items while Black Friday is best for big discounts like saving money on TVs or laptops, but this gap is narrowing as Prime Day becomes a bigger sales event each year.
How should I prepare for Prime Day 2021?
The most important thing is to make sure you have an Amazon Prime membership so you’re eligible to buy things during Prime Day 2021. A 30-day free trial will suffice but Amazon Prime is a sweet deal all year round.
As well as that, do your research and figure out what you want to buy. A good discount is only a good discount if you actually need the item otherwise it can be a false economy. Spend the next few weeks planning and figuring out what you most want to buy in the sales event. Don’t be afraid to figure out a budget and stick to it.
What else does an Amazon Prime subscription offer me?
If you haven’t yet signed up for Amazon Prime, there’s more to it than simply giving you access to the Prime Day sales. You also get fast and free delivery, free two-day delivery on Amazon Pharmacy prescriptions, access to Lightning deals all year round, Amazon Prime Video streaming services, free Twitch content, and access to over two million songs via Amazon Music. There’s also access to more than a thousand eBooks along with popular magazines, comics, and books with Audible narration.
An Amazon Prime membership costs $13 per month so it’s great value thanks to offering so much additional content.
