Fortnite from Epic Games first arrived on PC in 2017; featuring a mode called Save the World, players could jump online with a group of friends to collect resources, build structures, and defend against waves of zombie-like creatures called Husks. But the game didn’t soar to popularity until the release of its free-to-play mode, Battle Royale. It was a unique take on an already popularized and relatively fresh genre seen in games such as H1Z1, Arma 2, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Today, Fortnite: Battle Royale is a cultural phenomenon, the most popular online video game in the U.S. — and Season 2 takes the game to whole new level.
