Respawn overcoming challenges, making changes to Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch

Apex Legends is already looking good on the Nintendo Switch, as developer Respawn Entertainment is hard at work in bringing the team-based battle royale shooter to the hybrid console.

At EA Play Live 2020, publisher Electronic Arts revealed that Apex Legends will arrive to the Nintendo Switch this fall, in addition to activating cross-play for the game and unveiling the Lost Treasures collection event.

Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier, in an interview with GameSpot, revealed that the Nintendo Switch port has been in the works for a while, but it appears to be coming along well.

“It’s not without its challenges, but I’ll say it’s looking really good and running very well,” Grenier said, adding that Respawn has been making some changes such as supporting the Nintendo Switch’s motion controls through a gyro aim function.

“We’re testing it at this point, making sure that it’s good to go. It’s worth it,” Grenier added.

Grenier re-confirmed that cross-play will be among the features of the Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends, giving the option to participate in matches with players on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through Origin and Steam.

The same content will also be made available on all platforms for Apex Legends, according to Grenier.

EA Play Live 2020

While EA Play Live 2020 featured highlights such as Star Wars: Squadrons and the pending addition of more Electronic Arts titles to Steam such as Titanfall 2, the event failed to provide a sneak peek into the publisher’s future, at a time when players are looking ahead to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Digital Trends has reached out to Electronic Arts for any plans of upcoming announcements, including whether cross-play will arrive on more of its games in the near future.

Apex Legends is one of those multiplayer games I love, but am terrible at. When I was invited to a press demo for the game’s limited-time Control mode earlier this year, I was thoroughly embarrassed as my peers routinely downed me with a headshot from across the map. I’ve always wanted to play it more than I do, but I never felt cut out for the twitchy world of PC players.

Apex Legends Mobile solves that issue for me, though it creates some new problems of its own in the process. The standalone mobile version of the battle royale hit more or less feels like a one-to-one adaptation of its bigger counterpart (the most notable difference is the number of pop-up notifications trying to nudge players to the shop). That means I can fully enjoy the shooter in a more casual portable setting, one free from the mouse and keyboard crowd.

Newcastle has one of Apex Legends' most intriguing backstories to date. Newcastle is a Captain America-like superhero in the game's world who has tried and failed to qualify for the Apex Legends tournament time and time again. As it turns out, he's so desperate to enter it because he's in deep in debt. When a negotiation with his loan sharks turns violent, Newcastle's dad, who's related to Bangalore, decides to don the Newcastle mask and enter the battle royale in place of his son.

When Apex Legends' newest season, Saviors, drops on May 10, it'll bring some major changes to the battle royale game. Notably. the game's Storm Point map will see a drastic change thanks to a new activity and a giant, crustacean monster that's died in the middle of the battlefield.

Apex Legends: Saviors is the shooter's 13th season and it's continuing its story in some creative ways. Not only does it add a compelling character in Newcastle, but it also opens up the game's lore further by introducing the monster, which has some history with the game's heroes.
