Bethesda promises it’s still working on Skyrim: Dawnguard for PS3

Skyrim PS3 DLC

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim players on PlayStation 3 received good news on Monday when Bethesda announced that latest expansion, Dragonborn, would arrive on PC and Sony’s console in early 2013. It will be the first Skyrim DLC to hit the PlayStation 3. While Bethesda’s released multiple expansions for Xbox 360 at this point, including Dawnguard and Hearthfire, technical problems have prevented this content from releasing on PlayStation 3. Bethesda says that Dragonborn won’t be the end of Skyrim DLC on Sony’s console.

“We’re hard at work to make [Dragnborn] available early next year on PS3 and PC,” reads a new update at Bethesda’s official blog, “On PS3 in particular, we turned our attention to Dragonborn, as we thought it was the best content to release first, and we didn’t want folks to wait longer. Once it’s ready to go for everyone, we’ll continue our previous work on Hearthfire and Dawnguard for PS3. Each one takes a lot of time and attention to work well in all circumstances and all combinations of DLC. Once we have a better idea of release timing and pricing, we’ll let you know.”

It’s those expansions’ compatibility with all variations of the game on Sony’s platform that has apparently been causing problems. Following the release of Hearthfire at the beginning of October, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said that the studio was working diligently on the content but couldn’t get it to work consistently. “Performance isn’t good enough in all cases,” said Hines, “For most folks, it’d be fine. For some, it wouldn’t be.”

The standalone version of Skyrim released on PlayStation 3 in 2011 had a host of technical problems as well, with many players reporting crippling slow performances caused by the way the game saved information on Sony’s machine. To date, not all of the content introduced through basic patches on PC and Xbox 360 are implemented in the PlayStation 3 version of the game. Sony itself has worked alongside Bethesda to try and remedy the problem.

“The PS3 is a powerful system, and we’re working hard to deliver the content you guys want,” read a statement released in August, “Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we’ve been working on either, so this issue of adding content gets even more complicated. This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content.”
