Before we go any further, you should all place a hefty grain of salt on your tongues. We’re about to dip into some pretty heavy speculation, but given what little we know so far that’s about all we have to go on.
Roughly five hours ago the official Bethesda Softworks Twitter account released the above image alongside a frustratingly coy single-word explanation. “Tomorrow,” it says simply, though what exactly might happen tomorrow is anyone’s guess.
This being the Internet rumor and speculation have run rampant, with most positing the idea that the screencap is an image from the long-awaited first downloadable content addition for Bethesda’s wildly successful, critically-beloved The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. “Looks like a Stormcloak being interrogated by a Thalmor agent. Check out the collar and pointy ears on the dude in the foreground,” writes Facebook user Ben Ruddock.
As OXM points out it has been long known that the first two DLC packs for Skyrim will initially be exclusive to the Xbox 360, which, given the recent announcement of an upcoming Skyrim update focusing on Kinect voice commands, casts a suspicious air over the timing of this image’s appearance.
Assuming we are looking at the first screenshot from an upcoming Skyrim DLC pack, the picture gives scant information as to what that pack might include. OXM also notes that Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media has trademarked the word “Dawnguard” specifically for video game add-ons, and that the Skyrim community discovered low-resolution versions of familiar landmarks from earlier Elder Scrolls titles on the Skyrim disc (though neither of those facts really tell us anything concrete). For all we know this hypothetical DLC opens a rift between Tamriel and the post-apocalyptic wastes of Fallout 3, forcing players to combat wave after wave of giant Radscorpions with nothing but a rusty sword and the kinetic force of their screams.
That was supposed to be a joke, but now that it’s in print the idea sounds awesome. We won’t know for sure what Bethesda has up its sleeve until tomorrow, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a chance to FUS RO DAH that nuke in the middle of Megaton just to see what happens.
