World of Warcraft turns 10 years old in 2014, and Blizzard has released a documentary to mark the occasion. World of Warcraft: Looking for Group is an hour-long celebration of Blizzard’s landmark in modern gaming and the enthusiastic culture that has coalesced around it.

The film features extensive interviews with top Blizzard developers like Chris Metzen discussing the game’s genesis from the skeleton of a scrapped tactical RPG called Nomad through its explosive growth from launch onward. Learn behind-the-scenes details about snafus like when the studio basically invited a DDoS on its own servers by opening the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj without informing any server engineers of the event. The documentary also spends a lot of time speaking to the fans and players about how the game has impacted their lives, at one point turning to a montage of people who all explain how they met their spouses in Azeroth.

EverQuestUltima Online, and text-based MUDs before them had laid the technical groundwork for massively multiplayer online role-playing games, but WoW was the genre’s breakout success and the first to penetrate the popular consciousness.  The game’s launch in 2004 followed just on the tail of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and was instrumental in carrying forward the momentum that high fantasy had gained in pop culture.

The community has shrunk a bit since its 2010 peak of 12 million players, but has gained ground again in anticipation of its next expansion, Warlords of Draenor, which arrives on November 13, 2014. There is also a Hollywood film in the works, set for release on March 11, 2016.

BlizzCon 2024 is not happening despite Blizzard’s strong 2024 lineup
A still from World of Warcraft The Worldsoul Saga's reveal tralier.

World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch maker Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that BlizzCon 2024 will not be happening.

BlizzCon was a convention that Blizzard Entertainment held almost every year between 2005 and 2019 to celebrate its games and make new announcements. The pandemic and hostile workplace allegations against Blizzard meant that no shows were held in 2020 or 2022 (2021 was digital-only), but BlizzCon made its grand return in 2023. We attended it last November and had the opportunity to speak with developers and learn more about Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer's first visit to Blizzard, upcoming plans for franchises like Diablo and Warcraft, and more. Although Blizzard never outright confirmed that it would hold BlizzCon in 2024, the event was expected to continue after its return last year.

These Activision Blizzard games need to come to Xbox Game Pass this year
Sekiro easy mode mod FromSoftware Souls games gameplay difficulty

In October 2023, Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and by the end of the year, the latter company's CEO had departed. Now, this will be the year where we’ll see how Activision Blizzard functions when fully integrated into Microsoft. The most immediate change for those who play games will likely be Activision Blizzard titles coming to Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service.

Microsoft and Activision have explained that because of the tribulations the acquisition encountered, it was impossible to have Xbox Game Pass additions prepared almost immediately after the acquisition, as it did with ZeniMax Media. In the coming months, I expect we’ll finally start to see Activision Blizzard games trickle onto the service, even if we shouldn't expect it from this week's Developer_Direct. As Activision Blizzard is one of the oldest game publishers out there, having released hundreds of games, there are plenty of titles to choose from. I’ve cherry-picked the ones I want to see most.

10 significant video game anniversaries worth celebrating in 2024
Gordon Freeman's suit in Half-Life 2 RTX

2024 isn’t going to be as jam-packed with new AAA games as 2022 and 2023 were, giving us more time to go back and appreciate the classics. Anniversaries and the celebrations that follow are commonplace in the video game industry, especially if that anniversary is a multiple of five. Plenty of fantastic, influential games will hit milestones this year, but a few stand out. Some could even offer teasers into what might be in store for 2024 if developers plan to celebrate their classics. Regardless of whether these birthdays come with any presents, these are 10 video game anniversaries worth celebrating this year.
Warcraft -- 30 years

I can’t talk about video game anniversaries in 2024 without bringing up Warcraft. 2024 is filled with milestones for the series, thanks to some uniform releases from Blizzard. The entire franchise will turn 30 on November 15, as that's the day Warcraft: Orcs & Humans released and redefined the real-time strategy genre in 1994. Then there’s World of Warcraft, the most popular MMO of all time, which turns 20 in November 2023. Finally, the Warcraft digital collectible card game Hearthstone turns ten on March 11. To celebrate, Blizzard Entertainment plans to release World of Warcraft’s The War Within expansion and add Cataclysm to World of Warcraft Classic.
