In today’s day and age, launching an upcoming video game as hotly anticipated as Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 and not having it be a cross-platform game can be a death sentence. Some of the best PC games like Valorant choose to have limited cross-platform support, while others like Final Fantasy 14 break down all barriers. We already know that this will be the first time the series has launched on consoles at the same time as PC, but has Civilization 7 kept up with the times and included cross-platform support? Let’s find out.

Civilization 7 does have cross-platform support, but with a few catches. The game has fully crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch with the use of a 2K account. However, the number of players you can play with in certain modes depends on your platform. On anything but the Switch, up to five players can connect in the Antiquity & Exploration Ages mode and up to eight in the Modern Age mode. Switch players, meanwhile, are limited to four players in the Antiquity & Exploration mode and only six in Modern Age. Switch players are also not expected to be able to play on map sizes of Standard or larger, meaning anyone who wants to crossplay with a Switch player will also be subject to these limitations.

It takes something special for a new hero shooter to stand out from the competition. Games like Apex Legends and Valorant have already established dedicated fanbases that are hard to convert to a new game. FragPunk sets itself apart by letting players use special Shard Cards that completely change the rules of the game in addition to individual heroes. Being free and available on all platforms will certainly get people to check it out, but if it isn't a cross-platform game then it may not be able to hold people's attention if the player base gets too low. FragPunk is available for free on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC starting March 6 and will have full crossplay enabled from day one. There will be no barriers for players on consoles or PC to play with and against one another in heated FPS action. Being a 5v5 game with no offline modes, this will give the game the best shot at keeping a healthy pool of players for people to matchmaker with. However, for those who feel PC players have an advantage over console players using a controller, you can disable crossplay if you wish.

Hazelight Studios has established itself as the team specializing in the best co-op games. A Way Out and It Takes Two don't encourage playing with a friend, but requires it. The upcoming video game Split Fiction is the same story. While we loved those previous games, the one major fault was that they didn't have cross-platform support. That meant that you needed to either be playing in split-screen with your partner by your side or have the game on the same platform as your partner. Will Split Fiction also have that restriction, or will you be able to go on this adventure with a friend no matter where they are playing?

In older Civilization titles, each unit you had in a military could earn XP and eventually level up. Now, with Civilization 7, things have changed and new tips and tricks are needed in your combat tactics. Commanders are a brand new unit type that are the only ones who can level up and will carry over into new Ages. They work quite differently since they don't engage in combat directly, but the various skills can greatly increase your army's potential. Because they are the only unit that earns promotions, they come with multiple skill trees that take a lot of XP to work through. Being such a key part of the game, similar to Influence, we wanted to run you through the best promotions you should unlock with your commanders.

Commanders don't directly attack other units in Civilization 7, but have two other very important functions. First is that they can "pack" adjacent units. This will bring four (or more with upgrades) normal units and have them all move as one with the commander. This makes moving armies way more efficient and allows for tactical assaults and retreats.

The other function is providing buffs and coordinated moves to nearby units. Just having a commander next to your army grants various buffs (again, based on upgrades), plus the option to command multiple units to attack a single target at the same time.
