EA cuts online support for 50 games including Battlefield 1942 and Crysis

The body count from online multiplayer hosting service GameSpy’s imminent demise keeps growing, as EA released an extensive list of titles that are having their online support cut on June 30. Among the casualties are PC classics like the original Crysis and Neverwinter Nights and their sequels, Masters of Orion III, and both Star Wars: Battlefront games. Australian service GameRanger has already scooped up Halo: Combat Evolved for posterity, and there’s an online petition to save the Crysis games, but inevitably a lot of people will be unhappy about some of these.

The full list also includes some titles for the PS2, Wii, DS, and even PS3:

  • Battlefield 1942 for PC and Mac (including The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WW2 expansions)
  • Battlefield 2 for PC (including Special Forces expansion)

7 ways EA’s Black Panther game can get the most out of the comics books

Last month, EA and Marvel announced plans to give Black Panther his own video game for the first time. Given the character's longevity in the comics, it's somewhat surprising that Black Panther didn't make his video game debut until Marvel's Ultimate Alliance in 2006. Since then, T'Challa has largely been relegated to a supporting role in games. But there are reasons to be optimistic about this upcoming solo game. Cliffhanger Games, the newly formed EA studio in charge of developing Black Panther, is being headed up by Kevin Stephens, a former studio head for Monolith Productions. Monolith's Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were two of the best Lord of the Rings games ever made. If Black Panther can be anywhere near as good as those games, then it will be in great shape.

That said, there are a few things that Black Panther needs to avoid the missteps of T'Challa's last appearance in a AAA game, Marvel's Avengers. Black Panther deserves to be a title that plays to gamers and comic book fans alike. The decision to make it a single-player game is a step in the right direction, but for this game to reach its true potential, these are seven things that we want to see in EA's Black Panther.

EA and Marvel Games confirmed that a single-player Black Panther video game is in the works at Cliffhanger Games, one of its newest game development studios.

EA and Kevin Stephens, former VP and Studio Head of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor dev Monolith Productions, formed Cliffhanger Games in May 2021. It was established alongside other new studios like Ridgeline Games, Ripple Effect, and skate. developer Full Circle. Rumors of this game's existence emerged about a year ago, and an EA-published Black Panther game only became more plausible when we learned that an Iron Man game is in active development at Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space remake studio EA Motive. Now, we know this Black Panther game is real and learned a bit more about what to expect from it.
