Facebook Gaming expands cloud offering amid metaverse rumors

Facebook Gaming is expanding its cloud offering. The service will offer seven new games via the cloud, including titles from major intellectual properties like Harry Potter. The announcement comes amid rumblings that Facebook might be changing its company name as it attempts to refocus the brand on its metaverse efforts.

Facebook launched its cloud gaming platform last October with six titles. Since then, the library has grown to 45 games. The recent expansion included a partnership with Ubisoft that brought mobile game Assassin’s Creed Rebellion to Facebook Gaming.

Seven games are included in the new batch. The list includes Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, and Disney Emoji Blitz. In addition to that, developer My.Games is bringing four new games to the platform throughout the fourth quarter of 2021,t including tower defense game Rush Royale, Hustle Castle, Left to Survive, and Mushroom Wars.

While the games themselves aren’t big, the timing is notable. Just this week, rumors began to emerge that Facebook will change its company name soon. According to a report from The Verge, Facebook wants to better align its brand with its lofty metaverse efforts.

At the moment, gaming plays a major role in the budding metaverse. Epic Games is also racing to create its own piece of the metaverse, and games like Fortnite play a major role in that. While cloud gaming itself isn’t inherently part of a potential metaverse, it does help build toward Facebook’s supposed goal of creating “interconnected virtual experiences.”

News on Facebook’s branding change is expected by October 28, the date of the company’s Connect conference.

Google has launched the open beta for Google Play Games for PC in the U.S. The tech giant made the announcement in a blog post on Wednesday, saying that the beta is available for download in seven other countries as well, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.

"We’re thrilled to expand our platform to more markets for players to enjoy their favorite games on Google Play," said Google Play Games director Arjun Dayal. "As we move towards a full release, we will continue to add new features and evaluate developer and player feedback."

Amazon Fire TVs are getting their own cloud gaming hub dubbed Games on Fire TV. The app is similar to the Samsung Gaming Hub, though its focus is specifically on Amazon Luna rather than other streaming services.

According to a blog post that Amazon published on Wednesday, Games on Fire TV allows players to stream cloud games from their TV. If you're already subscribed to Amazon Luna, the company's cloud gaming service, you can stream games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, play a rotating selection of games for free every month on the Prime Gaming Channel, or download games from the Fire TV app store. The games that are currently available on the Prime Gaming Channel include League of Legends, Fallout 76, Total War: Warhammer II, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Don’t buy the Meta Quest Pro for gaming. It’s a metaverse headset first

Last week’s Meta Connect started off promising on the gaming front. Viewers got release dates for Iron Man VR, an upcoming Quest game that was previously a PS VR exclusive, as well as Among Us VR. Meta, which owns Facebook, also announced that it was acquiring three major VR game studios -- Armature Studio, Camouflaj Team, and Twisted Pixel -- although we don’t know what they’re working on just yet.

Unfortunately, that’s where the Meta Connect's gaming section mostly ended. Besides tiny glimpses and a look into fitness, video games were not the show's focus. Instead, CEO Mark Zuckerberg wanted to focus on what seemed to be his company’s real vision of VR's future, which involves a lot of legs and a lot of work with the Quest Pro, a mixed reality headset that'll cost a whopping $1,500.
