Gamers spent a staggering $9.18 billion in the third quarter of 2019

Xbox One S All-Digital Edition review

The video game industry is big business, and the latest report issued by the NPD Group shows just how much U.S.-based gamers spend each quarter. In 2019’s third quarter alone (July to September), spending reached a whopping $9.18 billion.

The report, Games Market Dynamics: U.S., breaks that number down to three figures. First, sales of video game content reached $8.1 billion in the third quarter, up 3 percent compared to the same quarter in 2018. These sales consist of digital console content, subscriptions, and mobile games.

“Games such as Borderlands 3, Candy Crush Saga, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, Madden NFL 20, Minecraft, NBA 2K20, and Pokémon Go were among the best-performing titles of the third quarter,” the NPD Group states.

Adding to digital sales were lackluster hardware sales during the same quarter, which at $575 million were down 22 percent compared to Q3 2018. Video game accessories were down 3 percent in Q3 as well, at $390 million. Gamepad and interactive gaming toy spending helped offset declines in headsets and other devices.

The hardware decline isn’t unexpected. With Microsoft boasting Project Scarlett’s capabilities and Sony teasing the PlayStation 5, gamers are likely holding on to their cash until the 2020 holiday season, when both are expected to arrive.

According to the report, even strong Nintendo Switch sales could not offset the overall hardware sales decline. Year-to-date sales for 2019 — from January through September — only managed $1.9 billion, a 23-percent drop compared to 2018. Year-to-date spending on gaming accessories declined as well be 3 percent, earning $1.3 billion.

Year-to-date spending on software, however, experienced a 1-percent rise to $27.9 billion. The report notes that sales of physical media declined during the third quarter.

“Growth in digital content spending on consoles has also been remarkable, driven by live service games that are building consistent engagement ties with consumers,” the NPD Group adds. “These factors have allowed the industry to reach growth, despite challenges in other categories of spend.”

At launch, Nintendo sold nearly 2 million Switch Lite units. It’s a new, smaller version of Nintendo’s handheld console that doesn’t include detachable, motion-sensing controllers or a dock. It’s smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the original Nintendo Switch. The Lite’s built-in battery lasts up to seven hours, slightly longer than the original unit.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns for Nintendo Switch canceled ahead of last-gen launch
Hulk shouts at an enemy in Marvel's Midnight Suns.

Superhero strategy game Marvel's Midnight Suns is getting its long-delayed Xbox One and PS4 port on May 11, but there's some bad news for Nintendo Switch owners: The Switch version of the game has been canceled.
2K Games and Firaxis released Marvel's Midnight Suns, a card-based strategy game focusing on the supernatural side of the Marvel comic book universe, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S last December. While Digital Trends enjoyed the game, it underperformed financially and the game's director left Firaxis altogether following its release. Originally slated to launch alongside the current-gen versions of Midnight Suns in October 2022, the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game were indefinitely delayed when the game was pushed to December.

Now, the PS4 and Xbox One ports will finally come out digitally alongside the Blood Storm expansion on May 11, but 2K confirmed in the press release announcing the date that "the Nintendo Switch version of Marvel's Midnight Suns will no longer be offered as part of updated plans."
Additionally, the release calls Blood Storm the "final" DLC for Midnight Suns, so it seems unlikely that the game will continue to receive lots of post-launch support, unlike other Firaxis titles such as Sid Meier's Civilization VI and XCOM 2. That's certainly a more muted ending than one would expect from a Marvel game from the industry's premier strategy developers.
Marvel's Midnight Suns will finally launch for PS4 and Xbox One on May 11. It's currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Where to find Republic Chests in Fortnite
Republic Chest

Star Wars is once again taking over Fortnite with the brand-new Find the Force event, which brings a ton of new quests, items, and cosmetics to the popular battle royale. If you want to complete the full event reward track and earn all of the skins, one of the quests you'll need to knock out is opening a Republic Chest. Of course, you may want to seek these out each game anyways, as opening them will reward you with a new DC-15 Blaster, which is an immensely strong firearm that has infinite ammo and excellent range. Here's where to find Republic Chests.
Where to find Republic Chests and what's in them
Republic Chests can be found at three locations on the Chapter 4 Season 2 map. You'll find some located about halfway between The Citadel and Shattered Slabs, some to the west of Slappy Shores, and some by the road southwest of Frenzy Fields. Land at one of these spots and search the white tent-like buildings there for the chests.

Each Republic Chest contains one of the new DC-15 Blaster firearms alongside a selection of random support or healing items. You'll commonly see Medkits, Small Shield Potions, and Chug Splashes pop out, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting prepared for battle from the items you get from the Republic Chests.

Resident Evil 4: how to deface Ramon’s portrait
Leon looks at a portrait

Resident Evil 4 has a couple of requests worth taking on to help you trade for some sweet loot, but "The Disgrace of the Salazar Family" is perhaps the most satisfying. The note to start this quirky sidequest can be found hanging right by the gondola at the beginning of Chapter 12, and it asks you to deface the portrait of Ramon Salazar in the throne room of the castle. It's an odd request for a survival horror game, but if we're being frank, the little jerk has it coming. We'll tell you where to find his portrait and how to deface it.
How to find and deface Ramon's portrait
Ramon's portrait is found in the throne room of the castle, which means you'll need to do a bit of backtracking through some areas you've previously visited. You'll also run into a handful of challenging foes as you pass through the areas leading back to the throne room, so be prepared to put up a fight.

When you finally reach the throne room, you'll find Ramon's portrait hanging on the left wall of the room – a much smaller portrait compared to the others found on the back wall. Your first instinct may be to start slashing away at it with your knife or shooting bullets into his smug face, but the way to complete this request is actually a little more fun and juvenile than that.
