Greninja wins vote for Pokémon of the Year; Pikachu falls out of Top 10

Greninja, the final evolution of Pokémon X and Y water-type starter Froakie, was named Pokémon of the Year, while perennial favorite Pikachu appears to have fallen out of popularity.

The 2020 Pokémon of the Year is…Greninja, the Ninja Pokémon!

The polls, organized by The Pokémon Company and held through Google, asked fans to vote for their favorite once per day, from one region at a time. After the dust had settled, Greninja, who is also a part of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, came out on top with just over 140,000 votes, beating second-place Lucario with about 102,000 votes and third-place Mimikyu with about 99,000 votes.

Here are the top 10 Pokémon of the Year:

  1. Greninja – 140,559 votes
  2. Lucario – 102,259 votes
  3. Mimikyu – 99,077 votes
  4. Charizard – 93,968 votes
  5. Umbreon – 67,062 votes
  6. Sylveon – 66,029 votes
  7. Garchomp – 61,877 votes
  8. Rayquaza – 60,939 votes
  9. Gardevoir – 60,596 votes
  10. Gengar – 60,214 votes

The top 10 features mostly Pokémon from the expanded collections, including a couple of Eevolutions, but only two from the original 151. That honor goes to Charizard and Gengar, while Pikachu, with a recent movie and the face of various spin-off games, is conspicuously missing.

Pikachu is found all the way down in the 19th spot with about 48,000 votes. Other first-generation Pokémon in the top 30 are Bulbasaur at 13th with about 56,000 votes and Eevee at 20th with nearly 48,000 votes.

Meanwhile, the Pokémon that received the most votes from each region are as follows:

  • Kanto – Charizard
  • Johto – Umbreon
  • Hoenn – Rayquaza
  • Sinnoh – Lucario
  • Unova – Chandelure
  • Kalos – Greninja
  • Alola – Mimikyu
  • Galar – Dragapult

The results for Pokémon of the Year were announced on National Pokémon Day, which is also when The Pokémon Company revealed the monkey-like Zarude.

Meet Zarude, the Rogue Monkey Pokémon in #PokemonSwordShield!

Zarude is a new mythical dark/grass-type Pokémon that will soon find its way into Pokémon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch. There is not much information about Zarude for now, but The Pokémon Company should provide more details as its arrival draws nearer.

The Pokémon Company recently launched Pokémon Home, an app that allows players to store and transfer Pokémon between games. It had a successful release week with 1.3 million downloads between Android and iOS, coming on the heels of backlash from hardcore fans against Pokémon Sword and Shield for Game Freak’s alleged shortcomings on the games’ development.

Pokémon Presents February 2023: how to watch and what to expect
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet protagonist holding glowing Poke Ball

Pokémon Day 2023 is nearly upon us, and it will bring another Pokémon Presents showcase full of exciting announcements regarding the long-running series. As Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were quite successful despite technical problems, a lot of fans are curious to learn what's next, both for those individual titles and the franchise as a whole.
Pokémon fans who want to learn about the series' future should certainly tune into this presentation. If you're wondering how to watch it and what kinds of announcements to expect for the first Pokémon Presents of 2023, we've rounded up all of that information here for you.
When is the February 2023 Pokémon Presents?
This Pokémon Presents showcase will start at 6 a.m. PT on February 27, which is Pokémon Day, as well as the 27th anniversary of the series. The Pokémon Company says the presentation will last "around 20 minutes."
How to watch
The February 27 Pokémon Presents will be officially live-streamed on the main Pokémon YouTube Channel. We'll embed the live stream below ahead of the presentation. Other sites and Pokémon-themed content creators will likely be co-streaming the event as well.

What to expect
Unfortunately, The Pokémon Company was light on giving any real hints as to what we'll see during this Nintendo Direct-like presentation. But if this showcase falls in line with previous Pokémon Presents live streams, then we can expect it to give us an overview of all the big Pokémon titles coming out this year. Currently, we don't know if any brand-new Pokémon games are launching in 2023; if there aren't, then hopefully we'll see some DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Some leaks may have also spoiled some of the Pokémon Presents' surprises. Leakers have found data for more new Pokémon forms that could potentially come to Scarlet and Violet via updates. Meanwhile, fans found mention of Spike Chunsoft in the new Pokémon Together website's source code, so it seems likely that a new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon from that developer is coming soon. Regardless of what's actually announced, February 27 is shaping up to be a really exciting day for Pokémon fans.

After 25 seasons, Ash Ketchum is retiring from Pokémon
Ash holds a Pokeball while a lot of iconic Pokemon stand behind him.

The Pokémon Company confirmed that Ash Ketchum will no longer be the main protagonist of the series' anime starting in 2023.
Ever since Pokémon! I Choose You! first aired in Japan on April 1, 1997, the Pokémon anime has followed the exploits of 10-year-old Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum on his quest to become Pokémon Master. After trying and failing many times across 25 seasons, Ash finally managed to become the world's greatest Pokémon trainer in Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series after winning the Pokémon World Coronation Series.
The Pokémon Company is deciding to leave Ash's journey on a high note and will retire his character as the protagonist of the Pokémon anime after the current season. Thankfully, he is getting a proper send-off across the final 11 episodes of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series, with classic anime characters like Misty and Brock returning to help tell "the final chapter in Ash and Pikachu's story." These final 11 episodes will start airing in Japan on January 13, 2023.
This won't be the end of Pokémon anime adaptions, though; The Pokémon Company will start a new series later next year, following two new characters named Liko and Roy. Details on this new series are still scarce, but we know it will also feature Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly, and a Shiny Rayquaza in significant roles. We're likely to see them venture through Paldea, the region Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are set in.
While the announcement that Ash Ketchum will no longer be the protagonist of the Pokémon series is bittersweet for those of us who grew up with the Pokémon anime, we can hope that the series will give him a beautiful farewell, and that Liko and Roy's series can successfully capture the hearts of a whole new generation of Pokémon fans.
