Kojima: Metal Gear Solid 5 uses new FOX Engine, stars Solid Snake

kojima metal gear solid 5 uses new fox engine stars snake will star

Konami will never, ever stop forcing Hideo Kojima to make Metal Gear games. It doesn’t matter how many times the designer threatens retirement, how many times he tries to finally kill off the lead character Solid Snake, or how many side projects like Zone of the Enders he tries to pursue. As the vice president of digital entertainment at Konami, Kojima knows his fate: He will keep making bizarre stealth games forever. Who can blame Konami? Back in 2008 and 2010, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker single-handedly boosted the company’s earnings, and those were console exclusive games back then. People like Metal Gear so more Metal Gear has to be made.

We’ve known since November 2011 that Kojima is in fact working on Metal Gear Solid 5. In a recent issue of France’s IG Magazine (via Gematsu) though, Kojima offered up a host of details about the new entry in the series. “There will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 with the new FOX Engine, but what we’ve shown was not gameplay, or anything like that,” said Kojima. He is referring to the cross-platform engine that Kojima Productions introduced in 2011. The FOX Engine is used for both PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and even PlayStation Vita games. “It was only a demo that we had developed internally and released because the lighting and interactions with the environment had fooled everyone.”

The use of the FOX Engine means that we’ll likely see Metal Gear Solid 5 on the current crop of consoles rather than on Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4. It will also purportedly be a different sort of game.

“About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things. There will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you ‘a favor’ like in the last Metal Gear Solid,” teased Kojima, “I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Es: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, will carve me up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5.”

As indicated by his comments about social interactions, the next game could mark a departure from older entries in the series. “Project Ogre,” a codenamed game Kojima has said he’s working on for some time, is said to be much less restricting than older Metal Gear Solid games. “The kind of game I’m making is some game that has a very wide entrance, a very open entrance. Rather than making something very cinematic, [I plan] to make something very free,” Kojima told CNN last year.

Who will be the lead in this more open Metal Gear though? Solid Snake, the seemingly finished protagonist of past games, will be back. “We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots.”

No rest for the wicked or the super spy it seems.
