Microsoft reveals the $299 Xbox Series S next-gen gaming console

Shortly after a series of reports spilled the beans on Microsoft’s next entry-level gaming console, Xbox’s social handle officially revealed the Xbox Series S. The company bills it as “next-gen performance in the smallest Xbox ever” and confirmed the $299 (£250 in the U.K.) price tag.

The tweet was accompanied by a picture that offers the first official look at the Xbox Series S. As the rumors suggested, the Xbox Series S doesn’t have its more expensive sibling’s towering design and instead comes packaged in a slimmer, white exterior. Microsoft showed it off standing in an upright position but based on the orientation of the Xbox logo, it will likely be used in a horizontal position. Further, the picture hints that there’s also no disc drive, meaning the only way to load games on this console is by downloading their digital copies over the internet.

???? Let’s make it official!

Microsoft didn’t reveal any hardware details or how much the Xbox Series S’s internals will differ from the Xbox Series X. The online post also didn’t say when it will go on sale.

A few hours before Microsoft confirmed the Xbox Series S, a report by Windows Central claimed the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S may finally go on sale on November 10 for $499 and $299 respectively. At launch, Microsoft will reportedly offer monthly Xbox All Access financing options as well, that get you a console and access to all Xbox series such as online multiplayer and Game Pass subscription. Under this plan, the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S could set you back $35 and $25 per month, respectively.

According to a leak by the Twitter handle, WalkingCat, the Xbox Series S will be able to run games in up to 1,440p resolution at 120fps and support 4K upscaling. On top of that, it is said to feature 512GB of storage, 4K media streaming, and ray tracing.

Microsoft, over the course of last year, has revealed a handful of hardware details of its next, flagship gaming console, the Xbox Series X. It will offer 12 teraflops of GPU performance and support 4K gaming at up to 120 frames per second. In addition, there will be 1TB of ultra-fast SSD storage and 16GB GDDR6 memory.

Since we’re talking about Xbox, our best move would be to provide you with all Black Friday Xbox deals, so that you can leverage the Black Friday discounts.

Visions of Mana paints a promising picture of the RPG series’ return
Red-haired girl with horns and dragon wing in Visions of Mana

The vibrant settings and character designs in Visions of Mana instantly alerted me that I'd be knee-deep into fantasy, riding on the back of a giant black wolf into the grassy plains of Fallow Steppe. A lush landscape welcomed me as I chatted with my teammates on top of my mount and tussled with little woodland monsters.

I had this experience at this year's PAX East, where I went hands-on with a demo of the upcoming RPG. I never played previous Mana games, but I have enough experience with RPGs and real-time combat to name it one of the most gorgeous, action-packed games I played at the show. The shiny open-world and slick combat I experienced point to a strong comeback for the Mana series coming later this summer.

Mecha Break’s robot customization shakes up the battle royale formula
Mecha Break robot head with glowing blue eyes

Mecha Break isn't the kind of multiplayer game you can master right away.

You might equip a lance that you barely know how to use because it seemed like a good idea, and spend the rest of a round attempting to bash yourself into enemies to help your teammates. It incorporates action that's more similar to that of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon than it is to the shooter-focused gameplay in Gundam Evolution, Bandai Namco's multiplayer mecha shooter that shut down last year. Overwatch does come to mind, but in a way where mechs are still the focus rather than the pilots within them.

Microsoft’s next event could reveal the Surface Pro we’ve been waiting for
The Microsoft logo at the company's September 2023 event.

Microsoft has just confirmed that it will hold a Surface and Windows event on March 21, as previously rumored. The company went live with a placeholder webpage for a digital event titled "New Era of Work," teasing some new announcements and how it will " advance the new era of work with Copilot."

Set to kick off at 9 a.m. PT on March 21 , it's looking as though this event might be a little bit more focused on the business side of things, rather than consumer offerings. Microsoft doesn't get into many details, but mentioned how the event will be focused on "the latest in scaling AI in your environment with Copilot, Windows, and Surface."
