New Mortal Kombat Titles Announced

Midway Games on Tuesday announced the final Mortal Kombat franchise installment for current generation gaming systems as well as a separate Mortal Kombat title for Sony’s PSP. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is set to debut this fall and will be available for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, while Mortal Kombat: Unchained for the PSP will appear in the fall as well.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, said Midway, will feature every character from the Mortal Kombat fighting universe, a create-your-own fighter mode and a create-your-own fatality mode. In Mortal Kombat: Unchained, features will include multiple fatalities per character, multi-tiered interactive backgrounds, different game modes including head-to-head Wi-Fi capabilities, six new fighters, and a new endurance mode.

“As the final chapter of Mortal Kombat on current generation gaming platforms, we’re eager to raise the bar for the fighting genre yet again with Mortal Kombat: Armageddon,” said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway, in a statement. “Building off of the tremendous successes of Mortal Kombat: Deception in October 2004 and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks in September 2005, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon introduces the most comprehensive cast of playable characters from every Mortal Kombat title, both past and present, in addition to the first create-a-fighter mode in franchise history.”

I spent some time on the other side of the country for work last week. I was more disconnected than usual from the standard game release cycle during that time, but tuned in just enough to see Mortal Kombat 1 impressions going live across social media. When I flew back to New York on Friday night, I decided to unwind from a long trip by dropping $70 on a digital copy and enjoying some good old-fashioned violence.

Those plans were killed faster than Johnny Cage. I’d try to launch the game only to be greeted by a countdown screen. Assuming it was a mistake, I reloaded the store page and noticed that I had absent-mindedly preordered the fighter instead of buying it. If that was the case, then how was everyone online playing it already? It turned out I hadn’t ponied up enough. Had I spent $110 for a Premium Edition, I would have gotten a chance to play it starting on September 14, the day before I landed. Instead, I would have to wait until Tuesday, September 19, to get access. I was so frustrated, I nearly ripped my own spine out.
